That's the rub isn't it. These people were so convinced by charisma that they just assume that atheists are like dominoes behind Richard Dawkins. Rather than spending their time trying to provide evidence of their god (which is what they'd be doing if they actually gave a shit/had two functional brain cells), they waste time attempting to erode the credibility of some mythical atheist priesthood.

I was an atheist LOOOOONNNNNGGGG before I ever heard of Dawkins, or Fell, or even that Einstein was a skeptic.

I came to atheism based on how bullshit the concept of god is...not because of some charismatic leader

They're so used to being followers and being told what to do by their religious leaders like the pope that they can't imagine that we don't need to be told what to do.
That we accept people like Dawkins et al as fellow travellers, nothing more.

And if Dawkins declared tomorrow that he was taking up islam I would be disappointed. Nothing else.
