As far as hollow points go that gold dot is designed to expend all it's energy in a hurry. A 230 grain FMJ .45 might stop somewhere in the third person it hit. That isn't really a desirable trait in a self defense round.

If your aim is target practice, a .22 is what you want. The rounds are cheap (and you can carry hundreds in your pockets- if you wanted to-, it wont wreck your wrist or shoulder, they're inexpensive and allowed at just about any range (also, there is very, very little in the way of game that can't be taken down with a .22). Want to shoot a 45 for kicks, rent it from the range. I only mention this because people often dream about owning a gun they have no use for and/or don't really understand what firearm would best fit what they want to do with it. I've also noticed that people become collectors, closets full of guns, they might shoot one or two of them a year..lol.
.22 is the way to go for a beginner.
Also Appleseed. If you get by their political agenda they can teach you how to shoot.
