For many years they were okay with it, then in the 50s they forbade it entirely, and in the past 30 years they've modified it to the point where it's more an issue of semantics than anything else. They will still claim that JWs are forbidden from accepting blood transfusions, but the loopholes are big enough to drive an ambulance through.
