FWIW I am 52, I've been married 25 years nearly (lived together for 5 years before that, so married when I was 27 ... that, for the nay-sayers, was my trial run BTW) and whilst it hasn't all been sunshine and roses I do believe it has been very much worth it and that being married makes for a better relationship in the end.

I would have thought that it's the relationship that makes the relationship good. You can have a great relationship without 'marriage' attached to it.
And you can have BAD marriages too.
It just depends whether marriage means something to you or not...
With me the answer is...why WOULD it mean something? And being open but being able to stay together anyway seems stronger to me, as I have said over and over again....
To each his own. If marriage means a lot to you and HAS meant a lot in your own persona experience, then that is of course your privilege.
I don't believe in it myself though for reasons previously stated and the huge double post or two I've made on the matter in response to fr0d0 lol.
