I respect that a person has a right to believe whatever they want, even the absurd. I am under no obligation to respect either the person or the beliefs they hold.
Most "religious" people do not believe because they want to; they believe because they were indoctrinated as children, and they have little choice in the matter.

This is not the reason most people believe, but it's what drives them to believe and is the biggest factor. They have so much emotional attachments that causes them to really want to believe which causes them to become severly bias towards their religion, unable to see the flaws of their thinking. Been there, done that.
They believe mostly due to their want to believe, which is due to many factors, but mostly out of attachment to family and parents.

At least theists have some reason to believe in a god (a book of fairy tales telling them it's real). Deists have nothing but wishful/wanton thinking.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Now they "want" to believe because they're fearful as shit that if they don't, their "soul" will spend all eternity in hell (away from their family and parents, who, of course, will be in heaven).

I respect people if they earn it.
If there are religious people they can earn my respect by believing what they like and not being dicks about it.
Religious fucktards who go about spouting off shit they believe are beneath contempt.

I don't wait for people to earn respect, I just give it. If their point of view is different to mine I accept it and I accept them for who they are. If they get a bit preachy with me I admire it as it shows that they have strong opinions.

It also often shows they are arrogant, aggressive and ignorant, with no respect for the feelings or rights of others . They can drop dead, or better, burst into flames; at least that would be entertaining.
What do I actually do? Walk away, unless it's on a forum to which I belong. A rare occurrence here in my state. Occasionally we get a small group in the city mall. When they start using loud speakers, the police cart them off. Although Aussies are fairly laid-back,we tend to have a healthy suspicion of and contempt for proselytisers of all kinds. The same goes for dickheads who bung a flag in their front yard. Here love of country is assumed, needing no displays of vulgar ostentation. We leave that to the Americans.

Preaching and having strong opinions are not necessarily synonymous. How many times have we had someone come here and regurgitate nothing but chunks of scripture and warmed-up Hovind like a well-programmed robot? If these things are their own opinion, they probably should get out more.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Not every religion teaches hell - yet we find people believing in the religions of their parents.

No, think about it, people whom preach to others are trying to help others from their point of view. For example, take Christians for example. A Christians whom doesn't care about non-christians is indifferent towards them not being saved and going to hell. A Christian whom cares about saving others, cares about them.
A Muslim trying to 'guide' a Christian believes he is guiding a person towards the straight path. Consider the outcome of the person life is everlasting, either in punishment or heaven, then they would be doing a huge favor towards the person.
So you have to look at this from their perspective, not simply yours.

Do try not to patronise me,there's a good girl.
OF COURSE I understand their motives, and could not give a flying fuck. Trying to 'help' others when such help is unsought and unwelcome is self righteous, arrogant,.pig ignorant and aggressive; IE contemptuous.

No, I do not. I owe those people nothing. Nor do I allow others to decide what I 'have to' or 'should do'
ON the internet such behaviour is called 'spamming' and most people loathe it.
