Probably why atheist homophobes are more likely to be closet homophobes. It may not be the realization that its impolitic, as I speculated, but to compartmentalize in their own minds.

Atheism is no guarantee of rationality. It's just a rejection of one form of irrationality. It still takes effort to get rid of all the rationalizations and inconsistencies in one's own thinking.

Growing up as a Christian in the South Wales Valleys I certainly spent a lot of time around homophobic bigoted cunts.

Their intolerant views had no impact upon mine and left no lasting impression, other than the fact that they were cunts, obviously. Even as a child I could appreciate they were wrong to discriminate others for their sexuality and I made every effort possible to resist or confound their tidal wave of bullshit and abuse.

I guess I've always been a bit of an anti-bully. Big Grin

Which is better than closet Homosexuals in religion. Its certainly preferable.

We aren't trying to implement thought crime.

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?

"Homosexuality is found in over 450 species. Homophobia is found in only one. Which one seems unnatural now?"

I don't remember where I read this quote, but it certainly seems very apt for the argument.

The only Reason why I ask it because I am one.
"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful" - Edward Gibbon (Offen misattributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca or Seneca the Younger) (Thanks to apophenia for the correction)

lolz, the only problem is if you try to bring that up they'll just switch the topic and shift the goalposts.

Well, I don't know about the parts you live in, but here, it's rare to see anyone who is fond of gays, atheist, moslem or otherwise.
Like one example, a very prominent transexual singer in Turkey went to prison in his time, and sent some baklava to the communist fraternity within the prison. After long deliberation, the communists declared that it was not okay to take a treat from a person who stands against the common moral and social values of the public, and turned him down.

Same goes for my mother. She is an atheist, of that I'm sure, but she is opposed to nearly all kinds of gay related things like rights to marry and adoption, or surrogacy, and tells me that there are some values are not bound by one's stance towards religion or god.
At least that's what I've learned from her.

Most of the world, and virtually all of the industrialized world, is opposed to homophobia. Mehmet apparently does not live in such a place, but he is in the minority compared to the rest of the modern world.

It's not confined to religion, no. Although religion often conflicts with common sense because they sign up to a set of ideas that don't allow room for development. That's what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket (full of holes). Things are gonna fall out and you're left looking like a fool.

Some people are just idiots regardless of faith, but religion has nothing to do with intelligence.
