Why are Christians against evolution?

I'm not sure why I'd try to convince anyone that evolution and Christianity are compatible.

So far no one has asked that of you (not here at least). I know a lot of Christians do accept the evidence for Evolution and are still Christians. I don't know why or how either, but if they want to keep believing that I'm okay with that.

Clearly but I do think we have to encourage the more moderate Christians, partly because the Fundy's are so awful but also because (or at least I strongly suspect) the capacity for religious belief is built into us by evolution (that skepticism is the harder path).

You are completely mistaking the scientific term 'theory' with your own interpretation of the word which obviously means 'idea'.

Evolution whilst being a theory is also a proven FACT! It has so much evidence to back it up that anyone who denies evolution obviously doesn't understand it.

The theory of gravity is also a scientific theory but I bet you are sitting down and not floating around your room. Or maybe you are stuck firmly to the ground simply by God's will..

As Dawkins said in an Interview with Lawrence Krauss (to paraphrase) - it is not a theory in the colloquial sense - it is a theory in the scientific sense. It is only a theory in the same sense that it is a theory "that this is a table" *Dawkins points to table*, hehe.

And he says that in the colloquial sense it is a fact, and if creationists are going to keep using the colloquial version of 'theory' - as in the 'just a theory' kind of theory - perhaps we who accept evolution are playing the wrong game, with all the confusion. Perhaps we should be using 'Fact' in the colloquial sense since creationists keep relentlessly using 'theory' in the 'just a theory' colloquial sense.

It certainly seems bloody difficult explaining to all these creationists that a scientific theory isn't 'only a theory' or 'just a theory' - it isn't 'theory' in the colloquial sense!! But I'm not sure the alternative of using 'fact' in the colloquial sense would be so easy either...I dunno.
