I think it is much more credible to say the Iranian currency halved in value because western targeted sanctions created an extreme shortage of Dollars in the Iranian economy, consequently driving up the value of the dollar against the value of Iranian Rial.

Much of the real and strong indicator of which way the wind blows seems to escape the mainstream press. For example, a major success of recent Obama's foreign policy in relation to Iranian seems to have gone completely unnoticed. Basically the US seems to have pursuaded the Chinese to renege on paying the $50 billion debt that China owes Iran for buying Iranian Oil in cash. China is the biggest buyer of Iranian oil and Iranian economy relies on this source of hard currency income. The loss of $50 billion in hard currency probably has a huge deal more to do fall in the value of Rial than anything else. This indicated a major change in the landscape of Iranian sanction since Iranian sanction probably won't work if China would break the embargo. But with China on the side of the embargo, the sanction would probably become much more difficult for Iran to deal with.
