Agreed - it is a shame that people still continue to throw their lots in with dictatorships maintained by the act of or threat of cruel, severe, or brutal retaliation on part of the ruling regime - shit like fucking "allah" or divine laws, for example.
Or- if you prefer, that similar complicity is elicited by the hollow excuse of "benevolence" as though the relative benevolence or malevolence of said dictatorship were the only qualifying factor in whether or not a dictatorship were justifiable, or preferable - let alone - perhaps most amusingly in this specific example...existent.

I can't help but wonder what it was that appealed to this dude, considering what used to come out of his mouth about his new-found faith before. Could it be he perceived some short term political advantage to it?

Perhaps he's using it as a political tool, who really knows, but I can't say I'm not happy for him if he's sincere.

IDK, I mean, as much as I like to invoke the cynical with politicians, perhaps he just found the faith, you know? If we was very critical towards this position it stands to reason that he would -from that moment on- be exposed to it often. It's no stretch to imagine that a person who spends time or effort hearing some side of a position may be swayed by it - and as mentioned...the guy already believed in fucking ghosts to begin with. I don't see anything surprising here.

Democracy isn't perfect, it can lead to bad outcomes. As the saying goes, democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. You can certainly point to weaknesses in the democratic process that enabled Hitler or put warmongers in control of the US military.

He was probably so far off-base about what Islam is really about that it was like a revelation to learn that a lot he blamed on the religion had more to do with political and tribal folly coated with a veneer of religious justification.
