I'd call it convenience. It's an association fallacy and extremely simplistic. The man attended a religious primary school and then seminary. He actively suppressed information about himself (as paranoid dictatorial fucks often do) and so establishing that he was even an atheist as opposed to a politician who found atheism to be a useful platform (as so often happens with religion as well) is shaky - at best (not mind you, that I'd care hide or hair if the man believed in a god or not). Meanwhile, it is demonstrably true that his communist parties distaste for religion was very accurately a distaste for mixed loyalties. "Thou shalt have no god before the state".
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Yes - hence the spread of atheism as better than the other religions.

I'm happy to accept it was a religion they were spreading instead but it definitely wasn't theist in an honest sense

Nope, more of a cult of personality.

As a pretext to cleanse dissidents, whether or not they spread atheism...how would they do that, praytell? How does one spread disbelief by violence? I think the best you could muster would be conformity-in-public.

Let me spell this out for you. Stalin did not like political competition. Stalin did not want to share power. The church was a political competitor. Stalin did not want to share power with the church.

I doubt very seriously that Stalin gave a flying fuck about what people really believed as long as they didn't present themselves as a threat to his power (same as any other power-monger, religious or not).

I don't think you can spread disbelief by violence - I reckon that's why he failed - but it was obviously the aim of his attack on belief in God: to spread disbelief.

It's pretty straight forward... He tried to spread disbelief in God: it's no secret.

The Russian Orthodox Church was a prime support of the Romanov Dynasty and I can see where angry peasants would have been more than willing to kill some corrupt priests. Fuckers had it coming. The same thing happened in France in 1789.

But, as Thomas Jefferson pointed out....

Quote:In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

In both Russia and France the church eventually figured out a way to get its properties restored which is all the fuckers really care about.

Who knows? Some day muslims may wake up to the fact that they are being victimized by the mullahs and exterminate them. Don't make the mistake that the French and Russkis made. Kill them all or they will come back worse than ever.

Uh...no....as I keep trying to explain to you, the point of using this as a pretext was much more palpably to gain unfettered control by removing any competing claim to authority of any kind. As Min has mentioned, the ground were probably fertile.

Facepalm Since when did we start trusting the propaganda machines of despots....I don't understand....
