It's like trying to explain string theory to a five year old. But this is something a five year old should be able to grasp since it's nowhere near as complex as that.

Even if they wouldn't have understood, why would that be a barrier? Isn't there plenty of things not meant to be understood, things to great to be understood - supposedly contained within said pages. Why was it kosher to drop ineffable mysteries on one page, but then we have an epilepsy when it comes to explaining the status of a floating rock with regards to light? Now this is just me, but even if said numbskills wouldn't understand (which, flatly, they would have) I wouldn't have dumbed anything down beyond the point of usefulness just to satisfy their ineptitude. See, me and god are just too different to be friends GC. We just wouldn't enjoy each others company.

I fear we might be headed towards a "god made everything the way it is just to make atheists look stupid" flavour of argument. I do hope I'm wrong.

How did you infer that I have an issue with authority? What makes god an authority?
Since I'm in the military, it looks like your assertion that I'm a rebel becomes null and void. Since gravity and the sun aren't assumed authorities, we can also discount those. Your argument is as vapid as your god.
Even if god created us, what gives him the right to control us? Even though my parents birthed me, do I need to conform to their world views? The correct answers to these questions are self-evident, and if you don't see it that way, then I have no choice but to call you a fool.

If there is a God it can be assumed that "it" is an unassumed authority which is why "it" needed people to proclaim "it."

I agree God has no right to do anything but be what it is and I don't believe God or any conception that I am aware of forces anyone to do anything other than live and that is optional.

You respect good authorities, and you lend your deference to ones that can not only earn your respect, but are demonstrably good to follow. The god as described in the bible is not any of those things; he's a petulant child demanding obedience because he's got the biggest guns, and leading the majority of the people on earth straight to hell just on a simple numbers game. Moreover, being an admitted omnicidal killer sort of discounts the idea of his authority being earned just to start with.

I've considered the same information you have but have arrived at a different conclusion. At one time I did think there was a great deal of truth in characterizing Moses as the world's first Fascist (Rense's 14 traits of fascism) but soon realized that nature was far more cruel than any God.
As a far as Hell or any notion of torture is concerned, that was and continues to be a well calculated propaganda tool designed coerce the serfdom into the bondage of religion.
