how to live as an Atheist in a Christian family

RE: how to live as an Atheist in a Christian family
My advice would be to talk with your family at sunday's dinner about it. Don't sound aggressive (even though it will most likely get pretty heated) because you won't win with that attitude. Try to be calm and clearly explain the reasons why you don't believe in god, but at the same time not appear as someone who won't believe in god ever again. Be prepared for "you're going to hell" and yadda yadda yadda. Just stay as cool as possible. Remember that you can always come here and talk about anything that's on your chest. Bird

You'll never overcome ignorance of that magnitude. You could probably fool them but then you wouldn't be happy with yourself.

You could try simply not engaging them. Wave them off when they start in with their bullshit and leave the room. Maybe they'll get tired of being cunts...but I doubt it. The one thing cunts never tire of is being cunts. The situation sounds intolerable.

My mom isn't terrible, but my father makes me go to church twice a week, once to talk to this man from church who is a professor at a Christian university. He is constantly trying to engage me in debates so that he can re-convert me, though he keeps failing miserably. I am currently in Texas for a week with my uncle, who I have learned was told by my father to talk to me about all of this. They are all absolutely abusive to me, laughing at me, calling me names, and degrading me. I have been looking for a job for months, but so far to no avail, and as I have no friends with an open room, for now I have to stay at my house. I'm absolutely miserable, and I'm at my wit's end. I don't know what else to say to them, because no argument, no matter how valid, will keep them from laughing at me, and they insist upon talking about this 3 times a day. Can anyone help me?

Depending on your family's particular flavor of Christianity, sometimes a few properly placed verses makes them stop and think.

Just don't use Deuteronomy 21:18-21 whatever you do. Don't want to give them any ideas.

I do not believe in the concept of sin, so I can throw all the stones I want.

Fuck you dude. What fucking country do we live in here??? No one should have to fake believing in something for any reason in a free society. This is the typical horse shit answer of a dirtbag christian: "Do whatever to get by, and just cower in fear until it's clear to live free. " What a shitty piece of advice. Seriously ... FUCK YOU!

"Intelligent Christians" that's hilarious. As if such a thing could even exist.
Believing in all-powerful wizards, talking animals, men floating into space and eternal life in a gated community covered in gold - pretty much rules out any and ALL possibilities of intelligence.

Christians, like every other ludicrous blood-cult, are fucktards. You are remnants of a primitive time. You all still fight with each other about who has the real god the way toddlers fight over who owns the shiny matchbox car at the daycare. Intelligence? Please ... what a joke. You people think that a 2000 year dead jew is going to come back floating just above the ground and take you all to a magical fairyland for the rest of time. You are all idiots.

Don't listen to the Christian. Let them ridicule and give it back in equal stride. Remind them of the stupidity that their religion shares with EVERY OTHER religion.

Right, when an atheist is dependent on his/her hardcore christian parents the best way is to ridicule their beliefs

This is precisely my problem. I don't want to hide my beliefs, because I shouldn't have to. If they can be freely Christian, then I can be freely Atheist. However, I can't fight fire with fire, because they'd just throw me out. I've tried using intelligent arguments, but they don't work with their backwards "logic." Right now I'm being forced to grin and bear it, but even this is miserable.

Of course, that whole passage is total horseshit...as even these bible-thumpers admit.

http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/co...oman-Taken

Quote:This story, beloved for its revelation of God's mercy toward sinners, is found only in John. It was almost certainly not part of John's original Gospel. The NIV separates this passage off from the rest of the Gospel with the note, "The earliest and most reliable manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53--8:11." That is, the earliest Greek manuscripts, the earliest translations and the earliest church fathers all lack reference to this story. Furthermore, some manuscripts place it at other points within John (after 7:36, 7:44 or 21:25), others include it in the Gospel of Luke (placing it after Luke 21:38), and many manuscripts have marks that indicate the scribes "were aware that it lacked satisfactory credentials" (Metzger 1994:189).

Of course, that makes it no more phony than the rest of your bible.
