I want to thank all of you so much; you have really helped me to figure out how to deal with my situation. I'm going to try my hardest to get out of my house as soon as possible, and until then I will just refuse to engage them in any religious conversation. I have taken some of the other, more ..extreme, ideas into consideration, but I'd rather leave my house on at least decent terms with my parents. But I thank all of you either way.

Good luck.
Another, slightly more serious possibility comes to mind. Use this time to learn about your family and their religion. You don't have to believe in their religion to find learning about their religion, the family history and so on engaging in and of itself. And if you express a willingness to learn, maybe they'll back off some and meet you halfway. ![]()
Good luck, Liz. I'm sure it is terribly frustrating to know that your family prefers their invisible friend to their real-live daughter but you cannot change them. You can only change yourself.

Funny, most of the intelligent people I have met have been religious even if it was just a weak form of belief in their particular faith. Mind you, I have not spent much time in the Midwest (historic Midwest either; I automatically think of this region when I think of Fundies) or the Deep South.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
I wouldn't take anything cratehorus says with the slightest ounce of seriousness. He's off his meds again, it appears.

I just thought I'd thow my opinion out there. I haven't toldy family for this reason. A few people know, like a cousin. However most of my extended family would disown me on the spot. Why would I want to deal with that drama? They cause enough drama as it is.
Personally since they already know, I'd try to make the best of the situation. It can be a learning experience. You need to arm yourself though. If they are going to try and convert you back, you need to understand their position better than they do. Well, you don't need to, but it helps. |
