Jesus has a friend named Tim. As a friend of Jesus, tim has a lot of respect for him, and tells his other friend Joe how great Jesus is. The exaggeration from Tim makes Joe think Jesus is way more awsome than he really is. It can be modeled as f(x)=x^2 So if the original Jesus is 1, x is the number of people who added to the chain of exaggeration, and f(x) would be how awsome the next person who heard the story thought Jesus was. Do keep in mind that the story would have been passed on verbally and not been written down for quite some time, and therefore much more prone to this process.
Edit: There, happy now?

It's not in my Concise Oxford either. It's a new word for me,for which I thank the OP.
I will use it on a pedantic and didactic lawyer friend at the first opportunity.
PS: I will of course first check it in REAL dictionary at the Library.Viz: The Complete Oxford Dictionary.

Your wrong about Koresh, I saw one a documentary on the BBC where one of the survivors of the fire stated that even though she lost most of her family in the compound she still believes that Koresh was the second coming.
Anyhoo that wasn't the thrust of my post. The point was the impact of asshole charismatics on the world.

There are many things that go against the case of an historical Jesus in my opinion. I see no problem with creating Christ out of previous religions. It seems that the character of Christ was created mostly out of the gnostic writings and Judaism. They make Christ the fulfillment of the awaited messiah that is so often prophesied about in the O.T. The entire life and story of Christ is plagiarized from the O.T. and the N.T. often refers to text from the old out of context and then states on several occasions that Christ has fulfilled the prophecy etc. etc.
Not to mention all the myths from which several of the elements of the Christ story have been plagiarized. There are many pre-christian myths that have the same theme:born of a virgin, performed miracles, was executed, rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven. A look into other ancient myths will prove my case just fine.
