WASHINGTON (AP) - It's long been known that America's school kids haven't measured well compared with international peers. Now, there's a new twist: Adults don't either.

In math, reading and problem-solving using technology - all skills considered critical for global competitiveness and economic strength - American adults scored below the international average on a global test, according to results released Tuesday.

Adults in Japan, Canada, Australia, Finland and multiple other countries scored significantly higher than the United States in all three areas on the test. Beyond basic reading and math, respondents were tested on activities such as calculating mileage reimbursement due to a salesman, sorting email and comparing food expiration dates on grocery store tags.

Not only did Americans score poorly compared to many international competitors, the findings reinforced just how large the gap is between the nation's high- and low-skilled workers and how hard it is to move ahead when your parents haven't.

Sure, so I had some difficulty figuring out
how to open this thread, but once I got it,
WATCH OUT! Then, I saw a link (i think)
and I thought about clicking on the link,
but I couldn't be certain that I should do
that, but once I figured out that my
monitor is not a touch screen, I did
click on the link, OH BOY! Now I'm just
getting started. Once I figured out
that my coffee cup was empty I put
more in it (problem solving skills) and
I called my European neighbor Heinz
over to read the article to me (I don't
want to strain my entitled eyes). Heinz
started laughing; I asked him what was
so hilarious. Heinz began speaking in
German, something like "Nicht schlau"
but don'e quote me on that one, he
also said "dumm", whatever that means.
Basically Heinz said that the article was
very nicely written and that it spoke
highly of America and American adults.
I don't remember loaning Heinz $20,
but since he asked if I had the 20 I got from
him, I figured I must owe him the cash.
