Christmas is a pain in my ass, but I'm not upset at anyone who wishes me a happy anything.

The war on Christmas

If someone says Merry Christmas to me, I say it back. I really don't have a problem with it. Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? WHERE???" RE: The war on Christmas

Don't you go merryin' YOUR christmas up in MY face! Nuh-uh! *z-snap* Oh, another thing. It is not like most christians even think of their religion when they say it. They can be very unfaithful, I would know.
I don't get bent out of shape if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. My ex-wife and I didn't really celebrate Christmas as such, but since it's a time when most of the rest of our families do honor the holiday, we went along: did the tree thing, exchanged gifts with loved ones, etc.
We did have a little tradition in which the kids got an extra stocking stuffer from "Santa Christ." Good little heathens that they are, it became a beloved family in-joke.
Its the middle of winter, it fucking cold outside, the days are short.
A holiday is just what is required. Presents and food and, sadly, decorations (daughter insists - wife is quite keen too). Anyway we open the doors to family and a host of waifs and strays and eat till we can't sit down anymore. What's not to like? - call the festival whatever you want - just wish me merry Xmas, happy hanukah, happy holidays or whatever with a drink in your hand and one in mine.

I might consider the wording a bit odd, in the States people usually say 'Merry Christmas!', but I generally take things in the spirit in which they are offered. For example, if I offered 'Happy Holidays!' first, and got 'Merry CHRISTmas!!' gritted out at me between their teeth, as a sort of correction for not saying 'Christmas', I might find it a little offensive, as it was intended to be. As far as I know, that only ever happens in the States. There's a certain kind of believer that will tell somene they know is an atheist or member of a minority religion 'Merry Christmas!' as a way of reminding us that it's their religion that holds the power in this country. A regular 'Merry Christmas!' would get a seasonal greeting back, depending on the day and my mood; with 'Merry Christmas!' certainly being in my repertoire. I just don't feel any obligation to say that over 'Season's Greetings' or 'Happy Christmahannakwanzaka!'. (November 13, 2013 at 10:48 am)Jacob(smooth) Wrote: I have a question for you atheist folks. I do not care at all, for several reasons. Christmas, the way it is celebrated in the Western world is more or less a secular holiday. For me, it is nothing more than a time for family and friends to get together for great food and a great time. Also, the vast majority of Christmas traditions are not in the least bit Christian. The tree, giving gifts, the ule log, mistletoe, etc are all pre-Christian Pagan practices. They were hijacked by Christianity in order to recruit more Christians. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
Doesn't bother me in the least if someone wishes me Merry Xmas, Happy Hanukkah, etc.
I just wish some wouldn't get bent out of shape and act like there has been a declaration of war if someone uses a secular greeting. RE: The war on Christmas

4 pages in, the answer is as I would suspect. Thanks for y'all s views.
I guess for balance I should start a thread on a Christian forum about how people would feel about being wished happy holidays.
