Prayer is blasphemous

There's technically historical accuracy in the Kushiel's Legacy series but I don't believe in a world where angels gifted the people of France with ichor in their veins and a predilection for BDSM. My point is that mistakes like that suggest human hands, and not a divinely inspired work that you would believe was above such mistakes.

You believe in God because of rational/philosophical reasons as well as reasons from your own subjective spiritual experience, you can attain this through prayer as the Bible outlines. You can't do that with Kushiel's Legacy series. Human hands did write the Bible but that doesn't mean that they weren't being inspired and motivated by God to write it.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.

They were inspired by something but I'm more likely to believe "brain disease," "hallucinogenic gasses or mushrooms," or "psychopathy" than I would "god".

What you have there is an opinion which is based upon on your own opinion. See the posts I made above.

There's no reason why an altered brain states couldn't initiate a genuinely mystical experience of God, you can keep your mind open on this. Prayer and meditation may be milder ways of attaining such an altered state of consciousness/awareness of God. I'd suggest death counts as an altered brain state that would initiate a "mystical experience of God" which many people who have had NDEs report.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.

There's absolutely no objective measure that suggested there was a being behind those altered states anyway, so excuse me while I don't believe in something 'extra' just because some sandy-assed 'prophets' said so 2000+ years ago.

NDE's are brain-fucks, nothing more.

Altered states of consciousness have been part of human religious, ritual and spiritual practice for the last 100,000 years and is universal in all cultures in every part of the flaming world. If you think this is an indication of absolutely nothing whatsoever at all of any significance then.

You have the weight of evidence of something going on there and you ignore/dismiss it in favour of what your own opinion states to be true. It's not like there is no evidence of anything whatsoever and believers have to "prove it with science" else it can't possibly be a true or justified valid belief.

It's only "something extra" because you decided it wasn't necessary to begin with for some reason.

That's your opinion again but it's an opinion you have that goes against the weight of evidence and reason and beliefs mankind has held universally for tens of thousands of years. It's not someone sat down one day and decided to invent some complete bull and make people believe in it.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.

You're right, that never ever happens.

Next time you get an unsolicited email from a multi millionaire living in Nigeria, for your sake ignore it.

Everything is just our opinion, remember - there's never scientific evidence to back it up.

The opinion that God exists and prayer does work/has an effect has evidence including scientific evidence of various kinds in support of it while the counter opinion of atheism is based on the opinion that God doesn't exist or there's no reason to believe he does which is the same difference and...that's it.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.
