Religion, ghosts, gods, chupacabra and beliefs?

RE: Religion, ghosts, gods, chupacabra and beliefs?
People wandering around with EMF detectors are getting paid well. No different than a WWF participant. :-) And I absolutely love the crazy haired guy on Ancient Aliens. He's so out there he entertains the hell out of me.

You're not an ass. Disrespect of the arm wavers has a lot to do with our own personal imbaressment because we have been there. We need not be fooled into thinking we are wise and they fools, though. We see the fable, they see the message within it. Small potatoes considering at the end of the day we are both clueless on a rock floating in space.

I still like fables. I like them a lot too. The begining of the movie Conan with Arnold and James Earl is a scene with young Conan being told the story of his people and his god, Crom, by his father. I 'd love to be that boy, with that father, those stories, and those gods. His father wrapped up Conan's whole world in a few short sentences [even reading it now gives me goosebumbs :-)]:
Quote:Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky, but Crom is your god. Crom, and he lives in the earth. Once giants lived in the earth, Conan, and in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered, and the earth shook, and fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters. But in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield, and we who found it. We are just men, not gods, not giants, just men. And the secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan, you must learn its discipline, for no one, no one in this world can you trust, not men, not women, not beasts... This you can trust. [points to his sword]
Like every fable there is a lesson. The only thing Conan can trust is his sword. Later in the movie that very sword breaks in Conan's hand. :-( The certainty and direction in life offered in that opening scene, no matter how appealing, just does not exist. Don't judge those who seek it or believe they have found it, because it is very wonderful indeed.

I don't really know how "wonderful" it is. I mean, this nation elected a president that claims god told him to end the tyranny in Iraq. And this man was elected again.

If this sort of thing doesn't send chills up your spine, I don't know what would. Fables are one thing, but when decisions are made based on superstition, people die. And if you take the entire history of just Christianity into account, the deaths are in the millions, and that's a conservative estimate. Include all other religions and all the violence they instigate, you would be looking at the most potent force of genocide ever conceived.

It feels good to have your life and world known and understood. That feeling is wonderful. Many people will see and feel the message instead of the fable because the message and the feeling are as real as the fable. But hell ya, a president claiming direction by God makes me want to puke too! :-) I expect more of a president. :-)
