I wonder if the clergy will jump out and perform an exorcism on the bad guy with a gun?
In seriousness, one thing every clergy ever told us was "I am not qualified to do psychological counseling". You can talk to your spiritual leader about the bible and god, but not about how you have a burning desire to kill your neighbor. I thought the left-wing desire for outreach and trained social workers was for "trained" people?
I also do worry that this could be a way for the state to prop up a particular religion or denomination.

I agree, that police and clergy showing up to an anti-abortion rally might not be a good look for de-escalation of the situation. I do think that social workers might be a better idea. They should have all of the knowledge of local resources that the local pastors do plus more.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I'm reminded of the Spanish Conquistadors for some reason. Somehow, inexplicable as it may seem, Christianity spread quite readily with armed messengers.

Mmmm...unless the ride-along clergy are confined to a particular religion, it's probably in bounds...and probably a lawsuit if they exclude a particular religion. It would be best for them if there isn't a Satanic Temple in the area. But IANAL.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

Kent Hovind made an audio recording of him attacking his girlfriend - he is as competent at being a boyfriend as he is at being a scientist.
At least she calls him an asshole.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

For a donation of $1,000, Jim Bakker will send you two books, a CD, a DVD, plus a miracle blanket which, if you put your bills under it, will miraculously help you pay them off.

LGBTQ people in Australia who work at religious schools have no protection from anti-discrimination legislation, and they fear the federal religious discrimination bill is about to make things worse.
Steph Lentz won’t be going to heaven. At least that’s what the Covenant Christian School told her in December as it prepared to sack her after she came out as lesbian.
Lentz was a devoted English teacher at one of Australia’s growing number of small, low-fee Christian schools, and hers is just one of many stories of discrimination against LGBTQ teachers dismissed or pushed out of their jobs, or pressured to remain silent about their sexuality by school policies and employment contracts.
Her sacking was perfectly legal under state and federal laws, which give religious organisations including government-funded evangelical schools exemption from anti-discrimination legislation.
“There’s too much pain, and too many lives are being negatively impacted,” says Patterson, who is not LGBTQ.
“I’m from South Africa. This is what apartheid was – it allows you to be discriminated against with a legal basis.”
“This discrimination is being funded by the taxpayer in the 21st century when broader society has said ‘this is not acceptable’.”

Its sickening. It took decades to get rid of most of the Christian-based laws in the US and through this same sort of shenanigan's they are all cropping up again. I was unaware that Australia had this same affliction.
Why is it so?
