Simple. Purely physical processes just happen; they are not directed to any goals. If your life was a purely physical process then it could not support purposes and meanings.

It's like the last ditch effort, just shout out Free Will!

Free will is all any of us have that we can call our very own, it leads each to a different life, a life all our own, different from all others.

Quote:They never answer when you ask whose free will?

Consider this an answer, yours all yours.

Quote:The rapist?

Yes imposing it on the weaker people, remember rape is more about power than sex, the sex is to humiliate.

Quote:The poor child being raped?

This child has free will also, unfortunately they can't defend themselves from the evil in the world, that's for the stronger and morally right to do.

Quote:Or gods for just watching?

God's will cost Him a terrible price but, it was one He was willing to pay and paid it for all mankind.

GC
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Jebus didn't pay any price if he's undying.

Keep in mind obviously we (atheists) don't care because we don't believe Jebus was a gawd or there is a gawd to rebel against, so no original sin. We just don't care. Also vicarious redemption is insane.

Hey, I'm sure it was an annoyance. He probably even missed the rematch Galilee Martyrs vs. Babylon United that night.

That's what he's confused by.
I don't think the universe is directed by a god.
However, I don't think "purposes and meanings of life" is a well-enough defined idea to really matter since some people define it to mean goals given to life by humans. Most apologists will define it in such way as to smuggle their conclusion(God exists) into it by defining "meaning" as goal given by God or something like that. So the claim deflates into a trivial tautology. Or worst the argument becomes an appeal to wishful thinking.

Thank you, yes Smile

That's assuming the person making it has enough brain cells to even be aware they are making such assumptions. For some I think it's an appeal to the "unacceptable!!!"

I said I didn't understand it because it's not even an argument.

I can easily conceive existential nihilism given that we have no reason to believe that our consciousness survives brain death, that 99% of people who have ever lived are utterly obscure and unknown, and nobody's accomplishments will make any difference to anything when either our species, our planet, our solar system, or our Universe is annihilated. May I suggest a new creation! Yet the idea of purpose doesn't exactly seem to be satisfied in the idea of eternity either, regardless if it's one where in which we don't exist at all or one where we're sitting on golden thrones singing kumbaya. I mean the idea of an end is that it is itself purposeful, and death is definitely more intrinsically meaningful, given natural selection, than simply living for the sake of living or being some God's plaything.

Would you care to support that statement at all, rather than just asserting it? Because I see no reason why a sufficiently advanced brain, composed as it is of physical processes, could not self-determine its own purpose and meaning.

And please don't insult us both by demanding that all purpose and meaning needs to be externally derived, as I'm fairly sure you're going to; covering for one assertion with a second assertion is hardly good argumentation, but more importantly it's also not true, as plenty of human inventions began as additional purposes assigned to objects that didn't originally serve them once new properties or uses for those objects were discovered.

I was thinking more along the lines of basic intentionality and sign/signified relationships. Those phenomena? would remain even if natural death is final.
