"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

I feel like I've lately seen younger couples getting married on mommy and daddy's dime, but older couples (30s or older) seem to be expected to foot their own bill. There may be some truth to that. Both me and my wife were 29 and finished with college when we married.
That's actually a sound reason the more I think of it. People get married crazy young around here. It is totally not uncommon at all for folks to marry at 18 or 19. That sounds insane to me, but whatever. Most are so young that they couldn't pay for a wedding if they wanted to. :/

Moreso with funerals. I will tell everyone here when I die, just have a wake keep it cheap, use a house you don't have to pay for. A little on food and drink sure, and even have a roast of me if you wish. Donate my body to science.
But don't waste money on a casket or cremation. The money spent on that I would want people to use for their own lives. I'll be dead so I will have no way to enjoy what you do for me. I get the mourning part that is normal, but wasting money on it beyond getting together is superfluous.
Weddings are absurd too. All that money could be used for bills or a house or a car or savings. A wedding is one day, it is the relationship after that that matters.
Death ceremonies are the oldest form of ritual we know. They pre-dates all the world religions, it is even believed to pre-date Homo Sapiens. ritual burial was around before we were.
I think death ceremonies have a deep resonance with us, Stonehenge is believed by some to be the centre of a Neolithic necropolis, it certainly has many burials in and around its complex and almost certainly played some part in ritualistic burials. Neanderthals were also believed to carry out ritual burials some of the time.

Missing my point. I am not saying humans should abandon everything, I am saying we should be pragmatic. Mourning is part of our evolution, so yea, we are going to do it. Unfortunately our species has far too much of a tendency to turn this natural behavior into a comic book. And because we make such a big production over everything others love it because they can play off our egos and insecurities.

I like reading about lavish weddings just because there is so much art involved. Tablecloths, decorations, food and drink, venue, gown and other clothes, the photos. I think it's all pretty cool, except for what it symbolizes: marriage. My grandparents have been married for 66 years. I am 39 and so many younger than me are already working on their second (at least) marriages. Not to mention the whole parenting issue.
Sorry, but I'm just a cynic to the whole marriage issue, but there's something about the party which is cool.

No there is not. The party itself is fine, the mourning itself is fine, but when it becomes bloated and grandiose it is no longer about our common existence, it is a reflection of our tribalism. The rich and poor die alike. Friend and foe die alike. Our empathy isn't in playing victim or boasting. Our empathy as a species is in accepting we are not special.

Brian, I still don't understand what is your problem with money "wasted" on marriages and funerals. People are entitled to use their money as they see please. There are many things I don't consider essential or important but people still buy them. For example, a lot of beauty products are superficial in my opinion

After I die, I want my remains scattered over Disneyland. Also I don't want to be cremated.
Why not cremated ?.
