Visions can be totally symbolic or a view of an event as seen on earth.

One time, I had an open vision where I saw a metal building on fire.  My wife was with me and didn't see any flames.
I walked down to where it was and there was nothing burned.  It was symbolic.
The book of Revelation has a huge amount of symbolism.
Just make sure your aren't down there in that Valley outside Jerusalem where the real thing will unfold.
What happens to the Muslims who march on Israel (upcoming)  will be a portent of what will happen in the valley of Megiddo
(Armageddon).
 God takes no pleasure in the destruction of the wicked.
He would that all come to repentance, the two groups mentioned above will have refused over and over- until time runs out for them.

You forgot something Professor. Atheists interpret the bible more literally than christian fundamentalists do.

I make no attempt to interpret the bible, I just read what it says. If this is supposed to be God trying to communicate with me, it really should be good enough for me to understand it without someone else telling me what it "really means".

Maybe that's where your problem is. Any literature must be interpreted within it's context, especially ancient writings from other cultures. The book of Revelation was purposely written in symbolic language. If you do a straight reading, you're not going to understand the message.

I wouldn't presume to correct God on his choice of words, or to think he was so bad a co-author that his words require context. If he wants me to interpret them differently, that's up to him to tell me.
