I would hope so. I don't perceive FB as particularly protective of Christianity or religion in general. Everyone ought to have a right to express their beliefs, regardless if it includes ignorance and bigotry.

I think you guys are missing the point. Yes it's a dumb, cheesy story, and no it's not particularly vulgar, but this post actually glorifies physically assaulting an Atheist for attempting to demonstrate his non-belief. The reason this is hate speech is because it encourages Christians to attack you! When I saw this story, it had over 60,000 likes. If Christians continue to treat attacking Atheists as a behavior that should be celebrated and cheered, then sooner or later, some of them are going to start thinking it's a good idea to try it in real life.

protip: never challenge god to something a human can do.

If you're going to challenge god, then make it worthy: keep a 1ton rock hovering forever, no strings, no magnetic or electric fields, no nothing physical, just god-like willpower.

Have you visited the Religion forum here lately? Do you think a silly story about a Marine socking an atheist is more likely to create an environment of tribalism and sectarian tension than the denigrating stereotypes and vicious insults nonbelievers regularly espouse? Do you want censorship of provocative speech?

It is interesting that followers of a religion whose founder taught to turn the other cheek would give so many likes to a story about punching a nonbeliever, no matter how jerkish, out. I think that the story tells a lot about the culture of American Christianity.

The antagonist is an educated man who questions religion. The good guy is a Marine who doesn't win a debate with words but with his fists. The story is far more negative toward Christians than many of those liking it realize.

Jesus would have flipped the prof's table over and chased him with a whip.

It tells even more about the contradictory labyrinth that is the bible: Jesus may have preached to turn the other cheek, but that's exactly what he himself did not do in his response to the moneylenders and, if you take the view that Jesus was god, in his establishment of hell.

That's the thing about the bible; you can use it to justify everything, if you really want to.

This insipid piece of emotional trash talk doesn't get my ire up much.

Free speech, even the advocacy of violence against some anonymous group, is fine. Open mouth, insert foot.

Meanwhile, I want to be free to burn Qurans, keep expanding my crucifix-in-piss collection and continue using the Book of Morons as toilet paper.

As Mr. Burns might say, "Let the fools have the sappy stories!", tents fingers ominously....

Since the hero of the story has to resort to violence to show Jesus is real, they have already lost.
