I'm a conservative atheist, I wish I could vote Republican more, I have had to hold my nose and vote Democrat, along with their idiotic liberal policies, far too often.  Then again, the Republicans aren't conservatives anymore so voting for them isn't really casting a vote for conservatism anyhow.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

I was always amazed by what Americans label as conservative so I kinda agree with you.

The reality is, in the early 70s during Nixon's Southern Strategy, a huge number of Southern hyper-religious Democrats, upset with their party over issues like abortion and civil rights, jumped over to the Republicans and, over the past 40 years, have largely taken over the party.  They are still, in virtually every way, Democrats, except for their hyper-religiosity.  The operation of the GOP today is more liberal than conservative.  They spend like a drunken sailor (not fiscally conservative), they never met a program to enlarge the government that they didn't like (not small government), they desperately want to control what the public thinks and does (not keeping the government out of the lives of the people) and they think they know better what people ought to want (not for personal responsibility).  None of those things are conservative, in fact, those are the opposite of conservatism.  What they are, though, are liberal traits.  It's amazing what 40 years of a group acting liberal and calling it conservative will have on the American people.  It's no wonder they have no clue what conservatism actually is.

Thanks for the info. Conservatism entails conserving something, usually some principles, tradition, economic policies, etc - It is also linked with prudence and caution and skepticism of arbitrary change. Being a conservative depends on what country you live in. In Britain conservatism is tied with things like royalty and monarchy, in France with French tradition and French values and the French revolution (naturally).

In a national election? Never. I gained the ability to vote in '98. No one the GOP has put on the national stage since then has been remotely palatable.

Locally, it's a different story because NH doesn't have many bible thumpers or other idiots. We're primarily Catholic and Protestant, but adherents in both sects run the gamut politically. That said, I have noticed an increase in Tea Party dolts even in local races. It seems that the plan is for the national GOP to poison the well locally, which is disappointing.

We really need a rational 3rd option. Conservatives who acknowledge science and don't try to pass legislation to push our society back 2000+ years. Where no one would utter something like 'legitimate rape' and actually, seriously mean it.

Just like how, in America, conservatism is tied to conserving the memory of our founding father:

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.

Honestly I don't openly identify with any particular political party.  I tend to vote on who I think will be best.  Though my affinity towards guns means I often vote right.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

For me, the entire party is disqualified because of their anti-science and religious-right stance. I won't vote for a Republican for ANYTHING until they change their ways.

Quote:Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.

The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom.... I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are?... I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."
- Barry Goldwater,

And even Goldwater was a warmongering asshole....but he got that one right.
