I think the main problem is that most, if not all, politicians don't know what it means to be poor or to be working for a minimum wage. That's especially true for American politicians and I would be hard pressed to name any president within the last three decades that hasn't been born with the silver spoon in his mouth.

Obama seems to be the first one, since - oh, the irony - Nixon.

I could be misremembering, but didn't Clinton grow up in modest circumstances?

Stepfather owned a car dealership. Might not be comparable to the Bushes but not exactly poverty line either. It was enough to send Billy to Georgetown.

If I were an American citizen at the next election, and Rand Paul were the Republican nominee, I'd vote for him. Assuming Hillary was the Democratic nominee. If it were Sanders vs Paul, it would be a tough choice.

Unfortunately the earliest I can apply for citizenship is November 2017.

I fear rand Paul is kind of a over idealistic light weight. That said even I don't agree with all of his policies I would vote for him. And I think if he plays his cards right he could have a real shot at it as he has poer based in the north and south.

Please,please, Tibs, don't vote for Paul..he's not who/what you think he is..and he spends considerable time telling people that...though they never believe him, no matter how often he pleads his case. I have some experience in the matter.....he's one of my senators. Other being the turtleman, obvs. You might say I'm blessed with levity in politics due to my location...lol.

(I bet you'll get a chance to vote for a Paul after 2017 though.....politics is a family affair after all)

Actually strong social conservatism is the equivalent of the predominant religion, otherwise by your standards some liberals would fit the label conservative as well.

Nope.  There are a lot of people with strong Christian views who insist on calling them conservative views when they really have nothing to do with each other.  Just calling it conservatism doesn't make it conservatism.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

Obama went to Harvard Law School.  That costs, at least today, about $60k per year.  Georgetown only costs $47k per year.  Who has modest circumstances again?
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.
