Show, don't tell. You've got at least a page to hook the reader.

The opening of a story is called a hook. "She killed a baby shortly after giving birth to it" is as good a hook as any. Why did she do it? Better keep reading if I want to know. There are many reasons someone might want to kill something right after it came out of, especially if this universe has magic in it.
