The opening of a story is called a hook. "She killed a baby shortly after giving birth to it" is as good a hook as any. Why did she do it? Better keep reading if I want to know. There are many reasons someone might want to kill something right after it came out of, especially if this universe has magic in it.

Why not?  Beginning, middle, end, no difference.  Maybe it was a demon.  Maybe she is psychotic.  Who knows?  Have to read it to find out.
