Thump, I did not mean to talk down to you, friend. There were a couple other people here insisting that Christianity and Islam are the same, and acting as though one thing that works for one will work for the other. My comment to your post asking why some structured order and a "pope" weren't needed for protestants to evolve out of the barbaric middle age phase, was more meant to be a general comment addressing some of the things others here have said. My apologies.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Fair enough; I'm sorry for taking umbrage.
I think much more important than a structured hierarchy in defanging militant Islam is the creation and thriving of solid civil institutions. After all, a Muslim "pope" would be able to declare jihad from centralized, organized power.
What is needed is the elevation of secular over religious authority, doubtful though such an outcome might seem.

In other words, theocracies and progress are mutually exclusive it would seem.

No worries. Yeah, it would only have a chance of helping anything if the people at the top weren't crazies themselves. But then again, most Muslims aren't crazies so it could be possible.

More or less it's with every religion you have people who just take it too damn seriously.
It's those people who are dangerous.

Unfortunately religions are designed to be taken as seriously as possible, due to the things that they claim are at stake.

Why do modern, supposedly intelligent educated people, believe the BS that ancient con men cooked up? The average people of today should be herding goats in some desert. They are too stupid to live in the modern world.

I've answered this numerous times in the thread.

There are people out there who only believe in God because they feel it is the "normal" thing to do. This is intellectual laziness, and yes, kinda stupid. But I think for most of us, due to our life experiences or for whatever other reason, it really does just make more sense to us for God to be real. I don't think this makes someone stupid or uneducated.
