Not since 1996. My parents still live in Anaheim. I grew up there, had a couple houses in Irvine.

Down for a visit from the northwest. Weather....So nice today.

What drives me away from theism? The scope, scale, and complexity of the universe makes the idea of a personified "first cause/designer" silly.

What drives one to Atheism, or perhaps evolution. Is it that one rejects God, then finds comfort in something else, or do you look at evolution and determine it to be closer to the truth?
Or, are there athiests who also reject evolution, and just don't know what to make of life.

Atheism is simply the position that one is not convinced that a god or gods exist. It is a response to a claim, not a claim itself.

Atheism is the result of correctly applying skepticism to the claim that a god exists.

There is no doctrine, no dogma, atheism is not even a worldview.

As far as evolution goes, it is supported by mountains of ever increasing evidence. Not to mention, that many theists, including Christians, fully accept evolution as being the best explanation for the diversity of life.

Evolution has very little to do with my atheism. I accepted evolution when I was still a theist.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Generally it is the low quality of intellect exhibited by believers.  You'd think 'god' would be a better recruiter.

I went to Anaheim Hills Elementary School!

If you're around for a little bit, and feel like coming down to Carlsbad (I don't have a car), we could hang out for a beer Smile

What does evolution have to do with God?
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

It mostly has to do with self reflection, and a dawning awareness that I can be so much more than you.

I don't claim personal appeals, or quote holy books. But I believe, and also believe Athiests are driven to their beliefs firstly by rejecting God. Not that theres anything wrong with that. Whether evolution is factual or not does not interest me. I was raised Christian, have altered what I believe, and am looking for Athiests to be honest how they arrived at what they believe.

You were in the fancy part of Anaheim. I was way over in the west side. West of beach blvd.

Hanging out for a beer would be great! Unfortunately I'm down here dealing with aging, dysfunctional parents. Flew down on an emergency basis. Spent the day cleaning up extreme hoarding behavior. Fun!

Carlsbad is nice. Looked at a house there at one time.
