It is kind of surprising sometimes how sympathetic the RCC is to Islam.

It makes sense in a way. Both are opposed to gender equality, both have (largely) all male clerical classes, and both oppose homosexuality, contraception, and abortion.

In fact I believe some retrograde Islamic countries (Iran, Saudi Arabia and others) are some of the Vatican's only allies on their initiatives at the UN.

Speaking of France and "freedom of speech" I believe the French RCC was staunchly in favor of the Vichy regime during World War 2.

I don't think the RCC is in favor of freedom of speech as a principle, generally, even if they claim to promote "dignity of the human person."

Course it does. Just as everyone else has the right to be satirical. But satire by its very nature is disrespectful - statements like "You can't provoke, you can't insult the faith of others, you can't make fun of faith" are aimed at stifling that right. Just as referring to others critical of your opinion as "D-bags" simply for being critical does the same thing.

No one is saying he can't complain, but that same freedom that allows them to complain and you to throw around the term "D-bags" as if you don't know what it means allows us to laugh at them for it.
