UK to set school exams around Ramadan

UK to set school exams around Ramadan
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...count.html

I don't think I've heard enough yet to fully form an opinion. It sounds like a lot of exams are simply being moved to the morning of the day they'd be on anyway. If we're talking about moving exams earlier by weeks though, doesn't that negatively affect everyone? It gives you less time to learn the curriculum and prepare.

I just think it's stupid. No discussion about the asinine practices that are the real cause of these kids' suffering education, no, everyone else has to move to accommodate it.

And side-note as well, I'm getting sick of hearing this selective "Britain is a Christian country" argument, that people who never go to church bring out when Islam hits the news. We're a country which has historically had a Christian majority, we are not a Christian country anymore in the 21st Century. Stop that.

"Ironically like the nativist far-Right, which despises multiculturalism, but benefits from its ideas of difference to scapegoat the other and to promote its own white identity politics; these postmodernists, leftists, feminists and liberals also use multiculturalism, to side with the oppressor, by demanding respect and tolerance for oppression characterised as 'difference', no matter how intolerable."

We got our exam time table 5 days before our final exam.. Our University puts classes on Sat, Sun, even on new year and Christmas, it's a whole another matter whether students actually attend them.. and even if we don't we have to pay a hefty pay as fine in the end.. Not the best system I'll admit, but we have help from our teachers and friends. Smile

So have all the Muslim students just been skipping their exams up to this point?

They've probably been passing out or something. (Speculation)

What a totally fucking stupid pointless ritual. Accommodating this by messing with everyone is not OK, in my opinion.

If I want my exam moved even further forward because of a FSM religious wank festival, I wonder how that will be received?

Oh fucking fantastic, we bow down to the Muslims and yet again give them even more special treatment. As Rob has already said, do you think they would do the same for Pastafarians? Would they fuck.

If there's actually a good reason to do this Ramadan other than mindless tradition and dogma, why can't they move Ramadan instead so it doesn't cause all their kids to collapse during exams?

This is a worrying example of religious rules being considered above secular laws. I'm all for reasonable accommodation, but this is not reasonable in my opinion.

Pandering to Islam is about the worst thing we could be doing right now.

No religious accommodation is reasonable in my opinion. Religion should be a totally private thing that should be practised at home and in churches, it should not interfere with education or schooling in any way.

You ever think about the reason why kids get Saturday and Sunday off?

So the teachers have time to calm down. It's in the bible.

Pony: I know what you mean. I think accommodation should only be allowed when it makes no real difference, and doesn't affect others. For example, letting a kid wear a cross as long as they keep it hidden and don't go around poking it in people's faces. Just pandering to nonsense and letting them do what they want, regardless of the fairness or impact on others is not acceptable.
