How do you discern what is or is not a misguided Christian practice?

Is the practice based in scripture.

But different sects and different individuals interpret scriptural practices in different ways. How do you know your interpretation is the correct one?

What flavour of Christian are you? Pentecostal, catholic Baptist, Jehovah
S witness Mormon or one of the other 5000 or so sects. Are you young earth creation, old earth creation or sane?

I subscribe to the bible.   There is a term, sola scriptura, I am fond of.   I am, and have always refused to align myself with the many flavors, as you state, of Christianity.  They all appear to be in contradiction to the Word on some point or another.  I have never been an official member of any church; however I did attend a church regularly for many years.

 Perhaps I should have used the word comment in lieu of answer.  Truthfully, it’s not fun at all.    Time is a precious and limited commodity and I am the last person that expected me to arrive at this juncture in life.

That sure has the appearance of a baited question.  If there is no God and no eternal judgment then what is not permissible?

Yeah, I know what sola scriptura means. Some things from my latin classes stuck. But what does that mean for you? Are you a literalist, are you interpreting the meaning, do you have what you considers guidance? I mean, here on this earth, not some supernatural, highly debatable experience.

Pete, part of the reason they're asking you to which denomination you belong is that it's a favorite tactic of Christians who come here to say something vague about their religion, and then when we address them via the "flavor" we think they're promoting, they turn and say, "HA! That's not Christianity at all! You atheists just don't understand Christianity!"

Usually, they're just parroting some preacher who told them that such is the case. The fact is, however, that most of us come from strong religious upbringings, and the majority of us have studied the Bible and the religion itself (not necessarily the same thing, as you pointed out) in great detail... which is why we can discuss things from the point of view of a Pentecostal, for instance... but they never tell us which they are, in order to keep that game going. And, of course, all of them claim to have unique insight into what the Bible really says. It's quite annoying.

My question for you is, why the KJV? It happens to be my favorite translation, as I think the poetic language therein makes passages like those in Ecclesiastes and Psalms extraordinarily beautiful, compared to other translations. That said, the KJV is considered by most modern scholars (yes, Christian ones) to be a fairly poor translation, overall, compared to several of the new ones. It was written by a council of English bishops, for the purpose of helping to prop up the king's claim to rulership. If you don't believe me about this, go to any number of theological sites and read about it, or WikiPedia, or really any site that isn't claiming from the get-go that the KJV must be the only version used. I will provide links if you'd like, but I prefer to let you do your own Googling, so it doesn't appear I'm trying to "lead" you anywhere but to the facts.

I've never quite figured out from whence this uniquely American fascination with the KJV comes.

I suppose there is not a correct one as you state in the sense of one correct linear application with no deviation.  The intent and not the practice would be the metric by what is deemed correct or incorrect in many cases.  I have read that in regards to sin that what is sinful for one is not necessarily the same for another.  If you believe a practice to be wrong, then its is.  That does not imply that if one believes something to be ok,  then it is not sinful.

It certainly is a baited question, and that you didn't answer it tells me enough. And what is permissible is wrestled out between yourself and the laws of society.
