Seeing how my avatar is me holding a gun, bullets, and smiling I think we know which side I am on. I grew up an Army brat and in Texas so seeing guns everywhere is normal to me. (I have a picture of me sitting in the car holding my mom's -unloaded- AK 47 the day she was being deployed to Iraq because she was hugging my sisters goodbye) The picture I used for my avatar is from a annual day we call Shooter's Holiday. We gather on my future in laws' land and bring all of our guns to shoot and have fun. One year we had a cannon which was epic and one year we had a Beowolf gun (it took out fucking 6 cinderblocks it was a beast and I got to shoot it) I love guns, they are fun to play with... responsibly of course. I also respect what guns can do. I've had someone aim a shot gun at my face when I came up to the house really late at night while visiting friends in Mississippi. My father died from gun shot wounds during his military career. We've had guns in the house since I was little and I was taught about them. I sure as fuck knew not to even breath on a gun without an adult telling me I could, showing me, and helping me with it.

I no longer live in a small Texas town. I live in fucking Austin. The most hippy piece of shit city in Texas. It is scary here. I don't trust anyone. At the museum of Texas on the same street as the capital I was afraid to walk back to the parking garage by myself. I'm sure it is nothing compared to bigger cities or worse off countries but for a girl from a very structured military life and small town it scares me. I have to be at work by 5am on Saturday and Sundays (which is still Friday and Saturday night for those out partying) There are a string of assaults on women in apartment complexes in the area even in broad daylight. You can bet your ass I carry my gun on me.

We just got open carry in Texas meaning I can strap it to my waist and walk just about anywhere that doesn't have a 30.07 sign. You can also bet that my gun is in full view when I walk from my apartment to my truck and from my truck to the hotel I work at. I would rather an attacker see my gun, think better of coming at me, and trying someone else than to have it hidden on me and have to use it if they do attack. I don't -want- to use my gun on someone. I hope I never have to point it at another human being. I hope that the only time I fire it is in safe conditions for fun. But I will shoot someone before I let them attack me. I've been going to the gym and I am trying to get my strength up but I know without a doubt that I can easily be overpowered. I physically cannot stop a man from hurting me so I will be smarter and use a weapon to my advantage. (I also have a machete next to my bed and a knife in my purse)

I don't want to harp on this, but I have been reviewing what happened the other week when I woke up to police flashlights in my face. If I'd had easy, perhaps constitutional, access to guns, it's probable I would have had one in reach. The police would be similarly tooled as a matter of course and would have been prepared for me to 'defend' myself in an extremely confused home invasion scenario. I would probably never even have had chance to do more than reach for my gun before I became next morning's headline.

I will never forget in my Ethics in Law class when we discussed this 80 something year old woman who died this way. Someone entered the address wrong. So they swat invaded her house expecting to find drug dealers. She had a gun under her pillow which she managed to point at them before they all opened fire.
