I have trouble sleeping occasionally now. Mostly I just wake up too early. It's worse now because with my wonky knee I can't exercise as much. I take cyclobenzaprrine many nights to help me sleep in. It's just a muscle relaxant but it seems to keep me comfortable enough not to wake up too early.
Rarely now I'll have trouble getting to sleep at all. Then I just deal with it the next day. But the next night I'll take a zolpidium, generic for ambien. I also take one the night before my wife travels. She always packs all night and it lets me sleep anyway.

Just use sleep aids.

Becoming mentally exhausted works for me.

I average about 3 hours of sleep a night. I have 7 alarms set on my phone (2-3 minutes apart) to ensure that I actually wake up in the morning. If I sleep 4 hours, I'll wake up on my own or at the the first alarm, and feel reasonably energetic throughout the day.
If I get 5 hours of sleep, I'm goddamned Superwoman; virtually unstoppable. Co-workers stare at me like they're thinking:
"Is this bitch high?"
