It might be that we're not "tricking" ourselves into anything, when be believe in this, that or the other thing. It could be our brains MO to accept the truth of persistent input as a variable with which to do work. It's all just as "real" and "true" to the believer as a rock is to me...and for largely the same underlaying reasons.
If I tell a board that input4787865 is "unicorn", every time that input lights....it's unicorn, for realsies.
There's certainly an analog in that the faithful tell their children, upon some event or experience...."that's god you're feeling". Every time they feel whatever that is, after that moment, it could be another weighted occurrence, demonstrating the truth of input4787865.
