Anti-gay conversion therapy minister allegedly tried to meet 14-old boy for sex on Snapchat

A former Christian minister whose aim was to “cure” LGBTQ+ people through conversion therapy has been charged after he allegedly sent sexual messages to a person he thought was a teenage boy, according to authorities.

WFLA reports that 54-year-old Alan Chambers allegedly started chatting with an undercover agent in February. According to an arrest report obtained by WESH, the undercover agent was posing as a 14-year-old boy and Chambers allegedly sent him nude photos and other messages with sexual content.

WFTV reports that Chambers allegedly messaged the agent first on Snapchat before moving their conversation off the platform and onto the messaging app Telegram as well as text messages. Chambers and the agent allegedly discussed meeting in person multiple times; Chambers allegedly told the agent to take an Uber to meet him at his office in Winter Park, Florida.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I was sexually assaulted by an imam. He told me he had supernatural powers

"Aria" was 13 years old when she was sexually assaulted by an imam, who told her he was "healing" her.

A respected faith leader at a mosque in East London, Abdul Halim Khan would tell young girls and their parents they needed "curing" from "bad spirits".

After attacking them, he warned the girls that if they told anyone about the abuse, the so-called cure would be undone, they would be cursed, or that harm would come to them and their families from black magic.

"I genuinely believed he had supernatural powers," says Aria, which is not her real name.

She says Khan told her "something really bad would happen to me and my family" if she ever spoke about the abuse. And she wasn't the only one.

Khan abused seven women and girls over 11 years in the same way. His youngest victim was just 12.

He would convince them to meet in isolated locations - such as a flat or a car. There, he would rape or sexually abuse them while pretending to be a Jinn, a supernatural spirit.

Khan chose vehicles with tinted windows, gave one victim a phone so he could contact her, and encouraged another to climb out of her bedroom window to meet him.

It was Aria's mother who introduced her to Khan, after she began getting into trouble at school. She told her the imam would give her advice.

When they met, Khan told her to get into his car. "That's when he touched me inappropriately," says Aria.

"I had my eyes closed and he said there are going to be things that are knocking on the car window. And I did hear those knocks. But obviously I was 13 years old, I was terrified."

"I was not believed by my family. The people I expected to protect and support me instead turned away, blamed me, and continue to do so to this day," she says.

"I feel as though I'm lost. I question my identity of who am I? Where do I belong?"

Notre Dame Students Abused by Priest in ‘Weighing Scheme,’ Report Finds

A blistering report issued last week accuses the University of Notre Dame of failing to take action against a former priest despite years of alleged sexual misconduct against students while he was a dorm rector and while he worked at nearby Holy Cross College.

Rev. Thomas King conducted a coercive “weighing scheme” at Notre Dame during the 1980s and 1990s. As part of the scheme, he expressed worry over the health of male students and insisted that they go to a locker room and undress to be weighed.

“Once in the locker room he would direct students to undress fully before they stepped onto a scale,” the report said. “Multiple individuals, some of whom were weighed, were sexually touched or assaulted by Fr. King, both at Notre Dame and after he left.”

The law firm’s 25-page report concluded that Notre Dame, one of the nation’s leading Catholic universities, should have done more to respond to allegations of sexual misconduct in the case of Father King. The report noted that witnesses said they had complained to university employees about him as far back as the 1990s.

The report also noted that these instances were not the first time that the university had to confront allegations of sexual abuse by priests, and listed two other instances when priests had been accused.

The law firm interviewed staff in two separate departments that supposedly received the complaints, but no one could remember having received them, the report said. In other cases, the report said, university employees who heard the complaints did not understand the sexual implications of the “weighing.”

In 1997, Father King left Notre Dame for Holy Cross College, then a two-year institution that served as a feeder school to the larger university. He remained there for about 10 years, where he held sway over students because he was instrumental in recommending students for transfer to Notre Dame. The report said there were at least 15 cases of the “weighing scheme” across the two schools.

In addition to his time at Notre Dame and Holy Cross College, Father King served at parishes near Lakeville, Indiana, and Niles, Michigan. Following complaints there, he entered a senior home for priests in the Order of the Holy Cross, the report said.

The law firm said that during the course of its investigation, it was told of other priests who were accused of misconduct. Its report detailed claims against one of them, the Rev. David Porterfield, the rector at another Notre Dame dormitory, Sorin Hall.

Father Porterfield resigned in 1983 after Notre Dame learned of a complaint against him, but was later rehired, the report said.

Ahead of papal visit, Spain pushes forward with reparations for church sex abuse victims

Spain’s long-delayed reckoning with sexual abuse within the Catholic Church entered a new phase this year with the launch of a reparations program for cases that involve accused clergy members who have died and whose alleged crimes are too old to be prosecuted.

With El País’ creation in 2018 of a database of clergy sexual abuse cases, Spain began confronting a legacy of abuse by priests and cover-up by generations of bishops and religious superiors. It did so later than other Western countries, including the United States, Ireland and Australia.

As the database grew, so did public outrage, with Spain’s ombudsman tasked by Parliament to investigate how widespread the issue was. In 2023, the ombudsman delivered a damning 800-page report estimating there were hundreds of thousands of possible victims of church sexual abuse in Spain over decades — based on a survey of 8,000 people. The report also examined 487 known cases.

In 2024, the bishops unilaterally created a system to assist victims on a case-by-case basis. It came months after the Spanish government announced its intention to force the church to compensate victims, accusing the church of minimizing the problem. It said the church’s in-house system was ineffective in part because it lacked outside oversight.

For that reason, many victims said they didn’t want to directly approach the church.

Earlier this year, the bishops conference said it had paid around 2 million euros ($2.3 million) to victims, but understood some victims’ discomfort. It acknowledged the utility of the new state-church model.

Ahead of Leo’s visit, Spanish activist Miguel Hurtado has cited his own abuse case to highlight its potential weaknesses.

More than two decades ago, Hurtado says that a monk named Andreu Soler sexually molested him when he was a 16-year-old Boy Scout in a group led by Soler at the Montserrat Abbey, an 11th-century Benedictine monastery in the mountains outside Barcelona.

Initially, the monastery persuaded his parents not to report the alleged abuse to authorities, Hurtado said. He tried moving on with his life. But as Hurtado observed the reckoning around clerical abuse taking place years later, he went public with his accusations, including to El País.

The Montserrat Abbey, through an independent report in 2019, acknowledged multiple cases of sexual abuse committed by Soler over decades. But Hurtado said it did not assume any responsibility to formally compensate victims “because everything is time-barred, both criminally and civilly.”

Hurtado said he is disappointed that Leo will visit the monastery despite the abuse allegations, which he has detailed to the Vatican and other church authorities.

He fears the new system could leave many victims in the dark.

“The problem is that it’s built on sand,” Hurtado said.
