Anti-gay conversion therapy minister allegedly tried to meet 14-old boy for sex on Snapchat
A former Christian minister whose aim was to “cure” LGBTQ+ people through conversion therapy has been charged after he allegedly sent sexual messages to a person he thought was a teenage boy, according to authorities.
WFLA reports that 54-year-old Alan Chambers allegedly started chatting with an undercover agent in February. According to an arrest report obtained by WESH, the undercover agent was posing as a 14-year-old boy and Chambers allegedly sent him nude photos and other messages with sexual content.
WFTV reports that Chambers allegedly messaged the agent first on Snapchat before moving their conversation off the platform and onto the messaging app Telegram as well as text messages. Chambers and the agent allegedly discussed meeting in person multiple times; Chambers allegedly told the agent to take an Uber to meet him at his office in Winter Park, Florida.

I was sexually assaulted by an imam. He told me he had supernatural powers
"Aria" was 13 years old when she was sexually assaulted by an imam, who told her he was "healing" her.
A respected faith leader at a mosque in East London, Abdul Halim Khan would tell young girls and their parents they needed "curing" from "bad spirits".
After attacking them, he warned the girls that if they told anyone about the abuse, the so-called cure would be undone, they would be cursed, or that harm would come to them and their families from black magic.
"I genuinely believed he had supernatural powers," says Aria, which is not her real name.
She says Khan told her "something really bad would happen to me and my family" if she ever spoke about the abuse. And she wasn't the only one.
Khan abused seven women and girls over 11 years in the same way. His youngest victim was just 12.
He would convince them to meet in isolated locations - such as a flat or a car. There, he would rape or sexually abuse them while pretending to be a Jinn, a supernatural spirit.
Khan chose vehicles with tinted windows, gave one victim a phone so he could contact her, and encouraged another to climb out of her bedroom window to meet him.
It was Aria's mother who introduced her to Khan, after she began getting into trouble at school. She told her the imam would give her advice.
When they met, Khan told her to get into his car. "That's when he touched me inappropriately," says Aria.
"I had my eyes closed and he said there are going to be things that are knocking on the car window. And I did hear those knocks. But obviously I was 13 years old, I was terrified."
"I was not believed by my family. The people I expected to protect and support me instead turned away, blamed me, and continue to do so to this day," she says.
"I feel as though I'm lost. I question my identity of who am I? Where do I belong?"

Notre Dame Students Abused by Priest in ‘Weighing Scheme,’ Report Finds
A blistering report issued last week accuses the University of Notre Dame of failing to take action against a former priest despite years of alleged sexual misconduct against students while he was a dorm rector and while he worked at nearby Holy Cross College.
Rev. Thomas King conducted a coercive “weighing scheme” at Notre Dame during the 1980s and 1990s. As part of the scheme, he expressed worry over the health of male students and insisted that they go to a locker room and undress to be weighed.
“Once in the locker room he would direct students to undress fully before they stepped onto a scale,” the report said. “Multiple individuals, some of whom were weighed, were sexually touched or assaulted by Fr. King, both at Notre Dame and after he left.”
The law firm’s 25-page report concluded that Notre Dame, one of the nation’s leading Catholic universities, should have done more to respond to allegations of sexual misconduct in the case of Father King. The report noted that witnesses said they had complained to university employees about him as far back as the 1990s.
The report also noted that these instances were not the first time that the university had to confront allegations of sexual abuse by priests, and listed two other instances when priests had been accused.
The law firm interviewed staff in two separate departments that supposedly received the complaints, but no one could remember having received them, the report said. In other cases, the report said, university employees who heard the complaints did not understand the sexual implications of the “weighing.”
In 1997, Father King left Notre Dame for Holy Cross College, then a two-year institution that served as a feeder school to the larger university. He remained there for about 10 years, where he held sway over students because he was instrumental in recommending students for transfer to Notre Dame. The report said there were at least 15 cases of the “weighing scheme” across the two schools.
In addition to his time at Notre Dame and Holy Cross College, Father King served at parishes near Lakeville, Indiana, and Niles, Michigan. Following complaints there, he entered a senior home for priests in the Order of the Holy Cross, the report said.
The law firm said that during the course of its investigation, it was told of other priests who were accused of misconduct. Its report detailed claims against one of them, the Rev. David Porterfield, the rector at another Notre Dame dormitory, Sorin Hall.
Father Porterfield resigned in 1983 after Notre Dame learned of a complaint against him, but was later rehired, the report said.

Ahead of papal visit, Spain pushes forward with reparations for church sex abuse victims
Spain’s long-delayed reckoning with sexual abuse within the Catholic Church entered a new phase this year with the launch of a reparations program for cases that involve accused clergy members who have died and whose alleged crimes are too old to be prosecuted.
With El País’ creation in 2018 of a database of clergy sexual abuse cases, Spain began confronting a legacy of abuse by priests and cover-up by generations of bishops and religious superiors. It did so later than other Western countries, including the United States, Ireland and Australia.
As the database grew, so did public outrage, with Spain’s ombudsman tasked by Parliament to investigate how widespread the issue was. In 2023, the ombudsman delivered a damning 800-page report estimating there were hundreds of thousands of possible victims of church sexual abuse in Spain over decades — based on a survey of 8,000 people. The report also examined 487 known cases.
In 2024, the bishops unilaterally created a system to assist victims on a case-by-case basis. It came months after the Spanish government announced its intention to force the church to compensate victims, accusing the church of minimizing the problem. It said the church’s in-house system was ineffective in part because it lacked outside oversight.
For that reason, many victims said they didn’t want to directly approach the church.
Earlier this year, the bishops conference said it had paid around 2 million euros ($2.3 million) to victims, but understood some victims’ discomfort. It acknowledged the utility of the new state-church model.
Ahead of Leo’s visit, Spanish activist Miguel Hurtado has cited his own abuse case to highlight its potential weaknesses.
More than two decades ago, Hurtado says that a monk named Andreu Soler sexually molested him when he was a 16-year-old Boy Scout in a group led by Soler at the Montserrat Abbey, an 11th-century Benedictine monastery in the mountains outside Barcelona.
Initially, the monastery persuaded his parents not to report the alleged abuse to authorities, Hurtado said. He tried moving on with his life. But as Hurtado observed the reckoning around clerical abuse taking place years later, he went public with his accusations, including to El País.
The Montserrat Abbey, through an independent report in 2019, acknowledged multiple cases of sexual abuse committed by Soler over decades. But Hurtado said it did not assume any responsibility to formally compensate victims “because everything is time-barred, both criminally and civilly.”
Hurtado said he is disappointed that Leo will visit the monastery despite the abuse allegations, which he has detailed to the Vatican and other church authorities.
He fears the new system could leave many victims in the dark.
“The problem is that it’s built on sand,” Hurtado said.

Pastor, 81, gets 10 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting a girl in Moreno Valley
David Lee Helbling of Moreno Valley pleaded guilty in April to kidnapping to commit rape and lewd acts on a child under 14 years old under an agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. In exchange for his admissions, prosecutors dropped four related charges against Helbling.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Martinez, deputies were informed at the end of January 2024 of an attack on the victim in the 23000 block of Hemlock Avenue, near Pigeon Pass Road.
“In connection with the commission of the offenses, Helbling … kidnapped the victim, and the movement of the victim substantially increasedthe risk of harm,” according to the criminal complaint. “The defendant resided in the same home, and had recurring access (to her) with the intent of arousing, appealing to and gratifying (his) lust, passions and sexual desires.”

Ex-youth pastor in Renton charged with child molestation
Derek Nelson, 53, was charged with second-degree child molestation after his arrest May 27 in Renton.
The victim said the incident happened at the Great Wolf Lodge in Centralia. According to documents, the victim said Nelson approached him while he was playing in a wave pool and asked him to follow the man into a changing room/bathroom. After locking the door, Nelson allegedly took off the victim’s swim trunks and touched the boy’s genitalia and buttocks. The victim said Nelson then picked up the boy by his ankles and held him upside down. The victim said Nelson told him he was “looking for zits.”
After the victim was released and put his swim trunks back on, Nelson then threatened the boy by telling him that he’d “pay the price” if he ever told anyone. Under the impression that Nelson would kill him, the victim held onto the information for 10 years, until he began therapy.

Police uncover alleged child abuse, starvation, filth inside Fort Pierce pastor's home
A Fort Pierce pastor entrusted with protecting vulnerable children was arrested after police uncovered a deeply disturbing house of horrors.
Gwendolyn Denise Rolle, 59, faces five felony counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
Rolle is a self-proclaimed pastor at New Hope International Church near Avenue D and North 13th Street—leaving neighbors too terrified of her community standing to speak out sooner—police say she treated five children she had taken in, including two who are non-verbal, with unimaginable cruelty.
She was forcing four of the children to routinely urinate and defecate in a blue-green bucket, which neighbors witnessed them dumping outside.
With no access to a working shower, the children had to bathe on the front porch with a garden hose and soap while their siblings held up a bedsheet to block the neighborhood view.
The systemic abuse extended to starvation and extreme favoritism; while Rolle's own child ate fast food, the five others were called "bastards," forced to share single packets of Ramen noodles, or sent to bed hungry.

“A sexual predator wearing a priest collar”: Anthony Odiong gets life in prison for sexual assaults of parishioner
Jurors in Waco’s 19th State District Court deliberated 90 minutes Tuesday before recommending that Judge Thomas West sentence the former charismatic spiritual adviser to life in prison and two 20-year prison terms, which Odiong will serve concurrently. They also returned fines totaling $30,000.
Jurors on Friday found Odiong guilty of one first-degree felony sexual assault count and two second-degree felony sexual assault counts.
The 57-year-old Odiong, a native Nigerian who served as a priest in Waco, West, Louisiana, Rome and Florida, must be given credit for serving at least 30 years in prison before he can seek parole.
Prosecutors Ryan Calvert and Liz Buice introduced evidence that nine women came forward with complaints that they were sexually assaulted or treated inappropriately sexually by Odiong while he served as their spiritual adviser.
They also proved Odiong is the father of a 3-year-old daughter whose mother was a parishioner of Odiong’s in Luling, La.
A former Waco woman testified she carried on a three-year sexual relationship with Odiong while he served at St. Peter Catholic Center on the Baylor University campus. Their sexual relationship ended after two of the woman’s children walked in on her and Odiong having sex in the woman’s bedroom.

Carmel Catholic school sued over "months of bullying"
In a private school that is built for kids to be kind and act like Jesus, kids perform endless bullying, which culminated in a young man having his genitals exposed to everyone.
And the school did not put a stop to this. According to the lawsuits, the boy was later diagnosed with anxiety and severe symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. He eventually switched to virtual learning.
Plaintiffs in Catholic Church Abuse Case Weigh $800 Million Offer
For decades, Anthony Santucci told no one about the sexual abuse he says he endured as a young teenager at his Catholic church in the Bronx.
Distressing flashbacks, omnipresent anxiety and poor sleep hygiene have followed him for nearly 50 years, through his adolescence into adulthood. He blames leaders of his church and the Archdiocese of New York for failing to protect him and other children from priests like the one who he says abused him.
Mr. Santucci, 66, is one of the more than 1,300 people who have sued the archdiocese over sexual abuse claims and will soon face a monumental choice: accept the terms of an $800 million proposed settlement with the archdiocese or risk fighting it out in court, an option that would most likely lead the archdiocese to declare bankruptcy.
Under the terms of the proposal, the plaintiffs can choose a one-time lump sum of $250,000 or go before an arbitrator to seek a higher payment after a review of their abuse claims. The Archdiocese of New York would also be required to publish the names of clergy and lay leaders who were credibly accused of abuse on its website and update the list as more allegations come out. The archdiocese would also be mandated to keep copies of documented cases of abuse, where they can be reviewed by the public at Iona College.
“Money alone is not enough,” said Angela Walker, executive director of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, an advocacy group for church sexual abuse survivors. “Perpetrators have to be held to account, but not only the perpetrators, those who protected them throughout the years, who moved them from diocese to diocese.”
“That whole culture of silence, that hiding behind the shadows, that’s got to stop,” Ms. Walker added. “The public demands and has the right to know who these people are, and in that way we can protect another generation of children.”

Church of England apologises for role in forced adoptions
The Church of England has told birth mothers and children affected by historical forced adoptions that it is "profoundly sorry" for its role in the practice.
It follows the government confirming on Wednesday that it will make a full apology on behalf of the state over the practice, which saw thousands of mothers pressured into giving up babies for adoption because they were unmarried.
Between 1949 and 1976, the Church of England helped run, or was responsible for, about 100 mother and baby homes where women were sent to give birth.
In a formal apology, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dame Sarah Mullaly said victims experienced "pain and trauma and suffering and fear when you should have received care and compassion".
She added: "You have nothing to be ashamed of. The shame is ours and we're profoundly sorry."
Under the practice, unmarried pregnant women would be sent to mother and baby homes, in effect, to hide them from society.
The apology comes after two years of research by the Church into its archives and other records. It also spoke to birth mothers and adoptees.
The report also found that some mothers were described as "dim, feckless [and] inadequate" and the Church was aware that the quality of the homes "did not always meet acceptable standards".
Women who were sent to the mother and baby homes have spoken of the terrible conditions they were subjected to.
The Church's apology recognises that many of them were given menial and manual tasks as a form of punishment, even though they were heavily pregnant.

2 years after Catholic diocese bankruptcy, sex-abuse accusers’ lawyers say church delaying settlement
Two years after the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego filed for bankruptcy to help manage its response to hundreds of child sexual abuse lawsuits, attorneys for some of the survivors say the diocese has taken unprecedented steps to delay resolving the case.
More than 480 people who say they were sexually abused decades ago by San Diego-area Catholic priests have filed claims against the diocese in the Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. But the diocese and its insurer have filed objections seeking to dismiss more than 160 of those claims. Individuals whose claims are dismissed would receive no compensation once the bankruptcy is ultimately resolved.
“That many claim objections is unprecedented,” said Stacey Benson, an attorney representing some of the survivors. Her firm, Jeff Anderson & Associates, regularly works on similar Catholic diocese bankruptcy litigation nationwide.
“Something to that scale has never happened before,” Benson said.
A spokesperson for the diocese declined to comment, citing the pending litigation. Attorneys representing the diocese’s insurer, the Catholic Mutual Relief Society of America and the Catholic Relief Insurance Company of America, also declined to comment. Attorneys representing the diocese did not respond to a message seeking comment.
It was not a new tactic. The local diocese also filed for bankruptcy in 2007, eventually settling more than 140 claims of sexual abuse for $198 million. At least a dozen other dioceses across the country have also filed for bankruptcy to help manage their response to child sexual abuse lawsuits.
Attorneys for the survivors, such as Irwin Zalkin, whose firm represents more than 100 victims, have long maintained that bankruptcy is a way for the Catholic church to reduce the compensation it must pay.
Zalkin has also alleged in a separate lawsuit that before the three-year window opened in 2020, the local diocese fraudulently transferred hundreds of properties to holding companies in order to reduce its assets and thereby lower the amount of money it might have to pay as part of a settlement. That lawsuit, filed in San Diego Superior Court, has also been halted because of the bankruptcy.

Bishop of Northampton charged with child rape
A bishop has been charged with two counts of rape against a female under the age of 16.
Staffordshire Police say the charges against David James Oakley, the Bishop of Northampton, follow his arrest in September last year. The offences are alleged to have taken place in Staffordshire between February 2000 and February 2001, the force said.
Oakley, 70, is due to appear at Cannock Magistrates' Court on 14 August.
He served in several parishes within the Archdiocese of Birmingham before becoming Bishop of Northampton in 2020.
Oakley was also a front runner to become leader of the Catholic church in England and Wales at one point.

Like being ‘stabbed in the back’: abuse survivors left without trials after Christian Brothers’ unprecedented legal tactic
An abuse survivor feels as if he has been stabbed with a “sharp, long, bladed knife to the back” after his trial was aborted at the 11th hour due to an unprecedented legal tactic by the Christian Brothers.
Last week, the Christian Brothers sought a permanent halt to hundreds of cases lodged by survivors of abuse at its schools and orphanages, arguing it was about to go broke and could not afford to meet them.
It instead wants to sell off its remaining property portfolio, and set up its own scheme outside the court, to divide up the proceeds between a range of creditors, including survivors.
Church property records obtained by Guardian Australia show the Christian Brothers has spent the past decade transferring vast wealth – including holdings of land, school buildings and multimillion-dollar homes – to another Catholic entity, Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA), for $1 each.
Those assets will not be sold off to help survivors, according to EREA.
The federal attorney general Michelle Rowland’s spokesperson said the government “takes any alleged attempts by institutions to hide assets from victims of child sexual abuse extremely seriously”.
Arnold Thomas & Becker lawyers have 78 claims against the Christian Brothers on behalf of abuse survivors. Partner Jodie Harris said her firm would be scrutinising the property transfers with “laser focus”.
“[Survivors] know about the movement of assets to Edmund Rice over a period of time, and for them, all it is is the Christian Brothers trying to protect themselves again, at [expense to] their lives that have been devastated,” Harris said.
“That’s certainly where most plaintiff lawyers, most lawyers who are acting for people who were abused are looking. We are looking very, very hard at that.”
