I was raised in a denomination that believes demons, and demon possession are common. I certainly noticed that THEY had a tendency to misdiagnose almost any serious problem as demonic oppression or possession.

As for why only believers get possessed, a Pentecostal might think that possessing an atheist might be the only thing that would change their mind, and demons don't want atheists changing their minds, so it's hands off.

A corollary question is why do people of other religions have the power to cast out demons? It would be interesting if people of other faiths could only be successfully exorcised by Christians, but any culturally approved exorcism procedure seems to work.

Annndddd  Mister Agenda hits the nail on the head. Christians believe atheists to be in the Devil's favor and thus unworthy of such a divine experience such as demon possession! It's only the "special" Christians, whose faiths are being tested, who end up with demonic possession in their household. The thing is that no, Chad is incorrect. In daily practice all someone need do is say that they or someone else is demon possessed, and they can reap all the benefits of pretty much nullifying the self determination/sanity of themselves or others for personal gain. 

When it comes to Christianity (or any religion for that matter), Demon possession is just par the course for scapegoating a crime or neglect (if caught doing something bad or if they want to discreditsomeone else), letchery and debauchery (the devil made me do it!), and money making schemes.

It is news to me that demonic possession only occurs in Christians. Many other religions, East and West, believe in demons. Perhaps it is only because the Church has very strict criteria for determining if a demonic possession has occurred and elaborate rituals for casting out demons. As for atheists, they would not consider it a possibility so it would most likely be misdiagnosed.

Misdiagnosed as what? Epilepsy? Schizophrenia? Preacher lays hands on you then it is safe to get off those demonic modern medicines? How medeival!

Yeah, I mean, it says it's free--but hey once you're there and she's got you thinking, "maybe just maybe god DOES want to heal me today yeah?", and conveNiently the collections pan ends up in your hand, you dump all your grocery money in it in possible expectation of a long term cure with sparkles of hope in your eyes becauze this time--this time, you have all the faith in the world! 
And you go home ,  open a pack of ramen noodles, wake up the next day with nothing changed, realize y o u have zero food for the week, and consider that maybe you misinterpreted all the godly signs and you were meant to give all your money away to learn a lesson, or perhaps your money will be used to do good in this world like save a life--a small price to pay for an empty stomach, i mean, children in Africa are starving to death fgs!
