Who reacted the worst when you "came out" as an Atheist?

I haven't made it officially open. I have a lot of family that is going to freak the fuck out when they find out. I wanted to see if anybody had any stories about their own coming out.

I don't want to feel like I have to hide it. I want to be open and be able to post things on my facebook but I am absolutely scared of my dad and his family and how they are going to freak.

Actually, no one reacted particularly poorly now that I think about it. It was kinda awkward cause my mom still made me go to church afterward and my feelings weren't well concealed when I asked Sunday school teachers how a lion would eat grain even in an apocalypse. They all just kinda endured it. Mormons honestly are too nice, I should have been yelled at so many times.

I have Mormon cousins. can confirm they are unusually nice. but my family I worry about is Baptist. Much less nice.

My cousin is funny we went to her house and she invited some of the elders over whatever. I was like.. uh they're younger than me! also they believe some crazy shit and my cousin was like "They are so fair to women" blah blah blah I felt like they were trying to vaguely trying to convert me. also her daughter came out as a trans male.

I can attest to that. I too am a trans-man and theists don't take too kindly to that. Let's just say my atheism was a drop in the bucket compared to when I came out as trans.

My mother reacted the worst when I came out in my teens, but she got over it quite quickly. Overall thought, I have very little negative reactions to me being an "Atheist", plus if anyone does I just let them vent. It shows their not happy with there lives as it its or I of lately I just follow the Filthy Frank method. I should mention I live dead smack in the bible belt. because fml. I can't drive 3 blocks without passing 6 churches.

I don't live anywhere close to the Bible Belt and lose track of the number of Churches in my community.

It seems we don't have enough churches because they are still building them.

There's quite a lot of them here in New Mexico as well. The attitudes about it aren't as bad as what you'll see in the bible belt, though. The insane decibels from church bells several blocks away still wake me up every Sunday, though. That's the one place I'm not allowed to make a noise complaint about, though. I don't know how they get away with that.
