As a 1st yr apprentice chef I ate one black olive a day for a year to try to make myself like the taste.
Never worked, but the looks on my face was a great source of amusement for the rest of the staff. 
What about the taste is detestable?
I find black olives to have an unremarkable texture and taste. Green olives, by contrast, are sharp and feisty. Slave to the Patriarchy no more

I find the black Spanish olives tasteless?  Green ones are ok if stuffed with feta...
