Ask a former IV heroin addict

Ask a former IV heroin addict
Had a recent conversation with close friends about my past addictions and realized how foreign the world of drug addiction is to "normal people."

No question is too personal!

Also have, at times in the past, developed bad habits with cannabis, crack, PCP and prescription opiates.... though I've pretty much tried it all except methamphetamine and maybe some obscure research chemicals.

But in light of the opiate epidemic that has plagued the US in the last ten years or so...

“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll

What made you stop?

1. First tried pot at 14 with one of my best friends. Started out innocently enough I suppose. Fell in love with how it made me feel immediately but things didn't really get out of control until I was maybe 18 or 19

2. Realized I was miserable doing drugs. It became such a hassle trying to find money for heroin all the time. Couple that with the fact that I started to understand that I wanted so much more out of life than to just party and get fucked up all the time. Believe it or not it's hard to maintain any sort of fulfilling lifestyle when you're injecting heroin into your veins multiple times a day

The worse part is getting safe needles. It is a must.

I was always surprisingly good about that. A local grocery store near me always sold needles at their pharmacy department with little to no hassle. I think after a while they had you sign some log saying that you purchased needles but I never gave a fuck.

I rarely ever used the same rig more than a few times and always cleaned the syringes in between each use with alcohol and copious amounts of hot water. Looking back, not sure how much safer that makes it but I certainly one of those people who hung on to the same syringe for weeks on end. 20 packs were like less than three dollars so I never found it to be an issue to just gather up some change and go get a pack of needles.

Welcome to the club. Similar story. I quit almost 30 years ago (a slight nudge from some agencies). But unfortunately, 10 yrs in, I picked up the bottle for a few years.

Was it always street junk or were you converting pharmaceuticals from PO to IV? Maybe you were just a popper.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

What does PO stand for?

And no when it came to prescription opiates I never had a huge habit with them. Never really even had withdrawals from any prescription opiates tbh, but definitely abused them for some time. Only ever took them orally or by snorting or smoking them (freebasing with tin foil).

Started off snorted and smoking the dope until I eventually injected it and everything went downhill super fast from there.

PO (per os) = oral

Edit: Glad we both found our way out.

Same to you brother. I've heard terrible things about alcohol addiction and if I'm not mistaken alcohol withdrawal is the one type of withdrawal you can actually die from? Maybe benzo withdrawal as well I'm not sure about that though.

Life as an addict is, at the end of the day, miserable and is really not a life worth living.

Can you describe how it feels to use PCP?

Can you describe how it feels to use heroin?

Did you go through horrible withdrawl symptoms?

Were you afraid of HIV?

Have you ever seen trainspotting?

Did you not feel like you were crossing a boundry by injecting drugs into your viens?  It seens like a huge step up from snorting, smoking or ingesting.

Did you ever commit crime to fund your habit?

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.
