Ok I know Leo Varadkar has only been elected leader of Fine Gael, but unless Mickey Martin remembers where he left his balls six months ago (all signs point towards him still being gelded), Ireland will have its first openly gay Taoiseach (prime minister), to go with its first openly Leprachaun Uachtarán (president) Michael Twee Higgins.

But seiously I actually think this is a ver bad move by the parliamentary party*. Varadkar is openly Thatcherite, a political position which has never before prospered in the Emerald Isle, which while traditionally to ther right politically always had enough of Bolshieness that some concessions to socialist tendencies were neccessary. And at this stage with the Shinners strong and the Trots united enough to not immediately backstab each other, the next election will see the major parties either tack leftward or die.
