The one thing all atheists agree on theism is unconvincing.

I was raised extremely religious; predominantly at my mother's demand. Religious school with chapel service every day before lunch, church on Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Wednesday evening, and damn near any other time the church doors were unlocked. In time, common sense over ruled the offering plate and I bailed on the thought of ever going back.
I've now been married for 18 years to a repetitively religious wife that doesn't particularly appreciate my religious jokes. She doesn't attend church very often at all, but still believes.
We agreed long ago to let our kids (14 and 17 yr old boys now) make up their own mind and have been very straight forward with our differing thoughts and they have been to church quite a bit.
In the end, it'll be damn tough for them to argue for or against either side if they don't know it well enough to carry on an educated debate.

"If i am asked flat out "Do you believe in god?""
There are thousands of assorted gods that billions of people have believed in. When asking about the biblical God the right question is "Do you believe in Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews and the God of the armies?"
Most religious people tend to disassociate themselves from the biblical God Yahweh for a number of reasons and probably no more than a handful of people on the planet actually believe in him. It's doubtful if any Catholics do because they love their idols too much. They completely ignore all of the commandments about not making idols and images and other artwork. So they don't take that particular God seriously.

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Well when you consider the odds of what follows a universe (which if you claim a designer has ALWAYS existed, is it inconceivable that the non-designed universe itself simply ALWAYS existed? Here's some balm for that cut by Occam's razor, BTW) either existing or coming into existence by whatever means, the emergence of an observer, or multiple observers, is practically inevitable. The number of planets per star, the number of stars, and all that, you will get some kind of life somewhere. We're not fucking special.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?

1. Elliptical 60%
2. Spiral 20%
3. Irregular 20%
Is recognized that only Spiral Galaxies could support life; others don't provide shielding from the galactic core radiation. So just on that basis, 80% of the heavenly bodies are eliminated from supporting any kind of primitive life.
How many planets does God to fulfill His reason for the universe? One. Almost all of the material making up the galaxies was used by God in fashioning the cosmos under 1 second from the big bang event.

That's still virtually a limitless supply in the grand universe beyond what we're capable of observing. Or did you think you were making a point? Because baseless assertions aren't points. I think you may have needed to be educated on that. Seems you may have missed a day in kindergarten.

If the OP is still following this thread, I just wanted to mention to you that with regards to getting your children the assistance they need in their school:
If they are considered to have a need that falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, then under Federal Law, the school (public OR private) MUST make accommodations for the individual needs of your children. The private school cannot, under the law, refuse to provide accommodations that would help your children learn in the Least Restrictive Environment possible. They also must provide an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for each child, which must get updated on a yearly basis by the IEP team. Parents are to be a part of that IEP team and are to have an equal say in how the IEP is developed for each child.
If this isn't happening, I suggest you look in your local area for either an attorney that specializes in Special Education, or find a Special Education Advocate. Usually your local ARC chapter will have someone to assist you.

I am curious as to if I should flat out tell my oldest (13) I do not believe in god or do I let him arrive to that conclusion on his own?
Well no wonder you became an atheist..
Catholicism is a satanic corrupt perverted "religion" and must have put thousands off Jesus over the centuries!
We need them and any other organised religion like we need a hole in the head!
Remember, Jesus said "You have one teacher, me" (Matt 23:10)
As for your son, if he asks you why you're an atheist, just tell him straight out why you don't like Jesus, and take it from there..
