People can recognize sociopaths because they take advantage of them, but it's something that happens over time. And, while I am no expert, sociopaths are often individuals who live their lives at the extremes; on the one hand, they can end-up in jail, or they can be extremely successful in business, politics, or even science, etc., and after that, sometimes end-up in jail!
Sociopaths do not care about others; rather, they use others as a means to an end in a manner that is unethical as viewed by the individuals whom they exploit. As such, they create a large "following" in life of individuals who hate and despise them for their unethical conduct. Within the Academy, Craig is largely despised (which is why most academics ignore him, which works to his advantage), and it's also why Trump is despised by many in the business world who know him and refuse to do business with him.

Taking advantage of people isn't limited to sociopathy, nor is it the most relevant or indicative component of NPD. What a person with NPD wants or gets from some other person can be so subtle or seemingly inconsequential to whomever they are extracting it from as to not be interpreted as taking advantage at all. Honestly, that's the most successful manifestation of the disorder, basically a measure of which are high functioning and so go under the radar, so to speak, and those which aren't, and fall to diagnosis.
All I'm saying, is that being a smarmy irritant who takes advantage of people isn't enough to conclude that someone has NPD, or is somehow..meaningfully, a sociopath. We can reserve those terms for reps that fit the description, I think....and still call the man an asshole, lol.

Yeah I think that a huge percentage of the population has ALL the characteristics of both NPD and sociopathy to a mild degree. It's a matter of degree. Very few people are sociopaths because very few people fulfil the majority of criteria to a greater degree.
Yes Trump and WLC are both shitheads. As are a huge percentage of people. They don't care about other people. But I think a huge percentage of the population are completely selfish too. Perhaps I am more cynical than you but I think it's true.
Indeed sociopaths and people with NPD often become successful businessmen and they certainly aren't all in jail.
But psychopaths aren't all in jail and are often successful businessmen too. And psychopathy is FAR more severe than sociopathy or NPD put together.
I think it really is a matter of degree. I think we'd a lot more evidence........ and we'd have to be a professional to properly diagnose WLC or Trump as actually having NPD or Sociopathy. There's evidence of them not giving a shit and being manipulative.... but those conditions far surpass that.

Okay, I agree 100% And, those with NPD are rarely diagnosed because they often see no need within themselves to be diagnosed!

I found that one to be extremely disgusting as well, Alex. Bell's Theorem was a work of pure beauty, and it is clear that Craig has taken no time whatsoever to understand physics, let alone Quantum Field Theory or General Relativity. The man talks out of his ass.

You might be wrong on that one there, Jeh, people with NPD are very....very self aware of their shortcomings and limitations - sometimes they're even hypercritical. This is what leads them to project a false self in the first place, and the maintenance of that false self and the fragility of their contact starved true self is what leads to sociopathy.......or so the theory goes. The narcissism, in npd, refers to their love of that image - not their love of self. They'll protect the image to their own (and others) detriment...which is how it manifests as a disorder. Deep rooted feelings of worthlessness and depression in addition to substance abuse are par for the course with individuals who receive the diagnosis. People don;t generally self medicate because they think everything is just peachy.
People routinely confuse being an asshole with narcissism, and run of the mill narcissism with the disorder on the spectrum of sociopathy. I suppose it's an honest mistake, I imagine it's difficult to distinguish between them alot of the time.

Wow. Just...wow. What type of person makes their life's work of an elaborate farce? Not a sane a person, surely. No wonder SteveII and RoadRunner have their hands so far up this guy's rectum.
