Xtians tried to pray Irma away

Yeah.  They really did.  At least some folks in that group apparently really thought that they could hold their hands out and ask god nicely, and Irma would just go "poof" and disappear.
It's really kind of too bad that they didn't have enough faith to just STAY on that beach.  We would have had some Darwin award winners for sure.

And when it turns out a few people narrowly avoided death, they'll claim god saved them. How glorious.

Strange, they don't often credit him for killing the others.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Yes. When a plane crashes, and kills all but one child, they will shout about how great god is for saving the child, while ignoring all the other dead people.

My cousins tried to stop the eclipse. They claimed "victory for God" when it got a little cloudy.

They are idiots.

I guess they didn't read that part of their Holy Horseshit where their god says he is the cause of "evil."

RE: Xtians tried to pray Irma away
My thoughts on why people pray, or think they can do faith healing, is that they want to feel like they have control over the world around them otherwise it's too scary. A lot of human activity comes down to the perception of control and trying to get it back. Stress comes from not being in control.

In a way it's like porn or drugs, a shortcut to getting the sense of reward without putting in the effort. A person knows that they are just looking at a still image rather than a real live person but it still turns them on. Narcotic drugs make use of existing neurochemical mechanisms evolved to allow us to function properly. Praying alleviates stress by giving the illusion of control without doing anything costly. Faith healing exploits people's pack instincts and gives people a sense of reward by making them feel valuable as pack members.

It allows people to freeload because they feel that they are contributing when in reality they aren't.

It's the same effect that allows them to call scientists stupid on the Internet.

If something paints their god in a bad light, then you're just interpreting the passage wrong.
