We do and can choose differently, and so could they have, then- they simply did not.  I think that it’s a mistake to think that things like this just happen or are an inextricable part of human nature.  They don’t and they aren’t.  It’s hard to hurt people.  It takes effort and conditioning and a massive network of funding and provisioning and constant recruiting.

The program was popular at the time, and most saw it as helping the kids.

If this had simply been putting schools on reserves (and letting the native people help craft curriculum) it would've been a good thing.

The U.S.A. also had the same programs of residential schools, though I don't know if their administration was better or worse (the Catholic sect that ran most in Canada seems to have been particularly abusive and secretive).  It was well known that many died of disease.  Unmarked graves are now being searched for in the U.S., but there isn't a peep in the U.S. media.

It’s old news to us. We operated twice the number of programs and were far less disingenuous in our expectations of them as a matter of policy. Some are still in contiguous operation, and there’s some irony to be had in the fact that a middle school textbook might be read by one of those kids about those schools while they’re in one.

We know that it was cultural and literal genocide. That’s how we teach it to ourselves, even. To some extent , that makes a search for graves assumed and thoroughly uninteresting. Insomuch as Canadia has been seen to be and sells itself as our nicer politer better governed cousin to the north........well, you get it I’m sure.

Another Mass Gravesite Found at Another Catholic-Run Canadian Residential School

This time, we're talking about the remains of 751 people at a former school in Saskatchewan.

We don't know how or why these children died, but the possibilities are disturbing. These Catholic schools were known for abusing children physically, sexually, and emotionally. The technology used to arrive that that number has an error rate "ranging from 10 to 15 percent" and it's not clear if only children were buried there, but the science appears to confirm anecdotes that have been passed down for decades.

Making matters worse, the Catholic institutions that controlled these schools are not fully cooperating with investigations, making it difficult to identify whose bodies may have been buried there. At least 150,000 Indigenous children went to these kinds of schools. There's very little doubt that more gravesites will be discovered soon. The Canadian government is even helping fund that process.

Why? Why in the fuck would Canada do this? This is the type of shit that pisses me off to no end and I was already pissed off at the bodies of kids being found and the typical circle jerk of Catholics molesting kids and hiding it. Why is it that society refuses to see Christianity for what it really is? Atleast there seems to be some pushback form society. I'm glad their shit is getting vandalized, but I won't be surpirzed if the Church itself was behind the Church burnings to hide evidence.

The schools were a deliberate attempt at cultural genocide -- but of course the term didn't exist back then.

The alternatives they saw were probably either a huge population who would be poor wards of the state, or a huge population that regained their identity and power and became a threat to English power.

As disgusting as this was, can we say that we would've chosen differently if we lived in the late 1800s?  China is making the same calculation today with the Uighur.  It seems to be an evil built into our nature.

Most of the graves were probably kids who died of Cholera or TB.  However, some may have died from abuse -- we will never know.

I would say, going on relative mortality rates, that half the children who died in Ireland at least were deliberately starved to death. For example, Bessborough in Cork never managed to reduce its infant mortality rate to less than five times the national level. And this was an institution that was being paid the average industrial wage by the state, a fee by the mother's family (or slave labour from the mother) and donations from the diocese, plus unknown to how much money from selling babies into foreign slavery through illegal adoptions to take care of children, an institution that was extremely well paid that didn't just not provide the bare minimum of care, but deliberately killed hundreds if not thousands of babies and young children in one location alone.

Another mass grave discovered under another Catholic school in Canada

CRANBROOK, British Columbia — A Canadian Indigenous group said Wednesday a search using ground-penetrating radar has found 182 human remains in unmarked graves at a site near a former Catholic Church-run residential school that housed Indigenous children taken from their families.

The latest discovery of graves near Cranbrook, British Columbia follows reports of similar findings at two other such church-run schools, one of more than 600 unmarked graves and another of 215 bodies. Cranbrook is 524 miles (843 kilometers) east of Vancouver.

"Let's call this for what it is," Louie told CBC radio in an interview. "It's a mass murder of Indigenous people."

"The Nazis were held accountable for their war crimes. I see no difference in locating the priests and nuns and the brothers who are responsible for this mass murder to be held accountable for their part in this attempt of genocide of an Indigenous people."

A recent homily by the head of Canadian Catholic bishops is sparking anger, after he implied that the church is being persecuted amid widespread attention to gravesite discoveries at residential schools.

He said that in his role he is getting “bombarded a lot,” and that in dealing with the media, he’s noticing “a lot of blame, a lot of accusations, a lot of exaggerations, a lot of false ideas.”

“And so I say in my heart,” he said. “You know something? There’s a persecution happening here. There’s a persecution happening here.”

The archbishop’s comments drew ire from Indigenous communities. “It’s very hard for me to articulate how outraged, disappointed, angry I am, to hear anybody in his position, given what’s happened, talk about feeling that the church in any way is being persecuted,” said Maurice Switzer, a citizen of the Mississaugas of Alderville First Nation who serves on the Indigenous Reconciliation Advisory Group of the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

“To me, this just speaks to systemic racism at the highest levels of our society – that anybody, in the wake of what’s being found out, would in any way suggest that they are a victim, given what’s transpired.”

Many in the Catholic community have also been dismayed. George Valin, a retired Ontario Superior Court judge, is one of them.

“Extremely disappointed. Sad. Offended. Embarrassed,” he said, of his reaction to the archbishop’s homily.

Most died of disease, not murder.  However, because records were either not kept, were destroyed, or are being withheld, we will never know who died of what or if some deaths were intentional or a result of gross neglect.

In 2005, a judge ordered the Catholic Church to raise $25 million to pay victims from church ran schools. In 2015, the church told the judge they could only raise about $4 million.
But then, between 2005 and 2015, the church managed to raise $300 million for cathedral renovations.
