You are making the mistake of thinking that if a hurricane doesn't hit the mainland US that it does not exist, Cap'n. 2005 was a shit year with Rita and Katrina and there is no arguing about that. However,

Quote:The U.S. has been lucky since that pummeling summer. No major hurricane (defined as a category 3 or above) has touched U.S. shores since then. Hurricanes have made landfall in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. And storms that weren’t quite hurricanes have caused damage to those areas and the U.S.
When I was a kid hurricanes formed over the Cape Verde Islands and moved across the Atlantic. I can't ever recall hurricanes forming in the Gulf which is something new. Rising temperatures create massive high pressure systems over the mainland US which deflect the storms coming across the Atlantic. Of course those same clockwise winds around the High that deflect the storms also have the unfortunate 'wrap-around' tendency to drive storms into the Gulf Coast and Texas.
But it isn't only the Atlantic Basin, is it?
Then of course, there is the Western Pacific.....
Note how few actually made it to the mainland of Asia. Again, one submits that high pressure systems over the mainland deflect the storms... but the islands catch hell!
And let's not forget cyclones in the Indian Ocean or those which form south of the equator and go the other direction.
No, just because the US does not get hammered does not mean that they aren't out there. This year, once again, we got ours.
