Would you date a theist?
RE: Would you date a theist?
I'll admit that my wife and I absolutely never discuss religion. The only time we ever did, was in the context of how to raise our children (before we ever had any). A conversation in which I plainly stated that I would not have children with a woman who insisted that they be baptised, circumsized, confrimed, or indoctrinated in any way. I made the case that I would rather have children who were educated, and fully able to compete in a world which increasingly demands scientific literacy as a prerequisite to success.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

And anyone who loves you more than she loves her religion would be likely to go for that if the two of you already matched in intellect, sex drive and some interests. Any person who puts a religion between herself and her potential mate deserves to find someone else-and I mean that with some sorrow. The Mormon chick told me that she was certain I had to believe in god due to how well I read her emotions. I told her that it was for the very opposite reason that I was able to do so: I was not operating under false premises, so I could see her very clearly.

Epimethean,

This isn't a joke, but rather what I've learned about the mormon religion from online resources as well as speaking to a few mormons, includeing a 7 week course of house visits by missionaries. According to the Mormon religion, the only way for a woman to get into heaven is by marrying a Mormon man. After death she would be his to help populate his planet. So, it kinda makes sense for a Mormon woman to marry only within the religon, at least according to their kooky beliefs.

Oh yeah, absolutely, Rhizo. They are absolute cult nutters. Funny thing about em, though, is they are freaks in bed. A friend of mine fooled around with two different ones and said things which my experience corroborated. They are definitely loony, and definitely repressed. This girl wore an awesome thong, but just the thought of her in that stupid holy sackcloth underwear they are "supposed" to wear makes me want to puke.

Yeah.. I would date a theist. Polytheists are great to date. Monotheists on the other hand, I pick and choose with a bit more zeal in those situations. If she is a fundy southern baptist and cant fucking stop talking about her delusions, then no..Im not going to handle that train wreck. If she is the laid back liberal christian then that is fine with me.

Besides, I dont wear atheism on my sleeve any more. That doesnt mean I am not honest when asked, that merely means the most I go now is the occasional humorous jab.. and thats more my absurdism philosophy coming out instead of atheism alone.

The first date is often the one chance for, if nothing else, a good meal. Hopefully, one of the added benefits is to gain insight as to who it is that is sitting across the table from me, and what about them besides that initial visual attraction, compels me to want to look deeper.
It's why on the first date I try to get a sampling of what matters most to me, in a relationship. Asking questions that matter, instead of making small talk that means not much at all.

I don't respect religion, though I know many Theists whom I do respect. So finding out if my date is someone I can respect as a person, who is not their faith, is what is important to me. If they're a Fundy type; judgmental, elitist, etc... I know that while I may still be sitting at the table, I've actually left well before dessert.

I married a theist, albeit a sort-of polytheist who has, so it seem, redefined the natural laws as to have names and personalities. That fits, I suppose, with someone who has also named musical instruments, the typewriter, the computer, and the telephone. Big Grin

Seemed to work better than a previous marriage to someone who called himself an atheist, but the term I've read here recently, "apatheist", seems to suit better.

So, yeah, I'd date a theist. It didn't work too well with ones who tried to convert me... and even WORSE with those (generally, Roman Catholics) who said my lack of belief in their Christianity was okay until I got emotionally close, then they turned around and said they COULDN'T be with someone who didn't share their love for Jesus and the Church, it just wouldn't do to have someone who was not going to heaven, and (drumroll) couldn't/wouldn't become the mother of their children! I'm also childfree and vocal about it.

I wrote those guys off as the liars they were. If they knew they couldn't deal with me in a long-term relationship, why let it go that far and THEN tell me that I'd have to change to be with them.

Dotard left sadly.

And the funner members of the forum want him back Undecided

I'm a poor excuse for a misogynist. And though I attempt to make up for it with light misandrony: I'm just not as funny as Dotard.

My money is on this as well... they are thinking a relationship will cause a conversion.
