Yeah, if there's any real, objective criteria for terming a country a shithole, America would almost certainly qualify; rampant poverty and bigotry, a government that wants to be Oceania from 1984 really fucking bad, and a DC cinematic universe that's absolute shit except for Wonder Woman. To be fair, we'd probably be a lower-tier shithole (or is that a higher-tier?), but we'd still be a shithole.

Then again, I suspect most countries in the world except for most of the non-US members of NATO, as well as New Zealand (and maybe Australia if not for the fact that all the wildlife wants you dead), would also count.

I think something has been missed (or at least not talked about enough) in this entire kerfuffle. 

The issue isn't that Trump used the word 'shithole' to describe the countries in question.  The issue isn't even whether some or all of these countries qualify as shitholes.  The issue as I see it can be split into two parts: Trump's ignorance and Trump's racism.

Ignorance:  Yet again, Trump doesn't seem to grasp what his new job, and even his country, is supposed to be about.  For the best part of two centuries, you lot have held yourselves out as a beacon of hope, opportunity and freedom to people from other countries, people that are having a harder go of it than any of us can probably imagine.  People from Haiti want to go to the US because of how they are forced to live - people from Norway are significantly less motivated to do so.  Sick, starving, oppressed people probably dream of a chance to make it to the US for a shot at a better life.  And they dream that because of what they've been told.  'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free' isn't just a few lines on that statue - it is the implicit promise that the US has offered for generations.  Trump lack of empathy for people who weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouths is bad enough, but it is even worse, even more demeaning, even more frightening is that he lacks a basic grasp of America's history and image that has made your country a goal for the world's most unfortunate.

Racism:  'Why can't we get more people from places like Norway?'  All he knows about Norwegians is that they tend to be tall, blonde and blue-eyed.  He didn't ask, 'Why can't we get more engineers and scientists?' or 'Why can't we get more people with financial degrees?'.  He wants more people from countries with demographics that are overwhelmingly white.  Forget about a potential immigrant's education, work ethic, criminal history - all that matters to Trump is that they have the proper melanin deficiency.

Ignorant, racist, heartless, cruel and cowardly.  Good luck with him, America.

Haiti is radically religious.  Norway has more people identifying as atheist than theists.  I don't remember, do you guys prefer religious zealots or atheists?  Do you prefer atheists because you're racist?

The problem is that liberals are really bad at picking fights.  

The 'shithole countries' debate should be about 'why do we want these people...' half of the statement.  There's a humanitarian argument to be made there.  Instead it's "Haiti isn't a shithole!"  Even though it's one of the worst countries in the world.  As Alpha said, it's literally got a shit problem as the Cholera problem shows.  The crazy amounts of rape and child slavery stuff isn't great.  It's a shithole.  But that's there line in the sand was inexplicably drawn.

We saw the same thing with Michael Sam.  Trying to be first openly gay NFL'r.  Nobody wanted to draft him because he wasn't good enough.  Left accuses NFL of not wanting him because he's gay.  

Colin Kaepernick is a bad QB but right on kneeling is a solid position.  But left says people are racist for not wanting him as their starting QB.

Ghostbusters was all girls, which is good, but the movie itself was really bad.  But left says it was amazing, and you only didn't like it because you're sexist.

Chik Fil A guy donates to some anti-gay causes, which is fine to complain about.  But then they start saying the chicken sandwiches are gross despite them clearly being amazingly delicious.

Louis CK isn't funny any more.  Woody Allen movies are garbage.  And on and on.  

They always seem to tack on these weird indefensible positions to their causes for no reason.  I'll never understand why.

Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to back to back NFC championships and a Superbowl and the 49ers signed him to a 7 year 126 million dollar deal.

My friends are 95% left wing, and I have literally seen at least one of my Facebook friends say one of those things, plus to s of random strangers on in the internet.

It's true, I don't know that it's exclusive to the left or anything, but there is this idea that if something is even a little right wing, everything must be bad about it, or that because somethi g is made by minorities it has some inhèrient quality to it, which all just comes off as nonsense to those who don't have the same partisan bone in the fight.
