Because trying to confiscate guns from gun nuts is going I cause many many many times the mass shootings as are currently happening. I mean, duh.

How many mass shootings have been the result of an attempt to confiscate guns? How many attempts (in the US) have there even been to confiscate guns?  How did you gain the ability to see into the future and determine the consequences of an hypothetical attempt to confiscate guns?

What if it's preceded by a medical/psych diagnosis that says that the person is unfit to bear arms?
Around here, there's a healthy respect for the medical profession, so people tend to take their heed quietly.

I just take what the gun nuts say they will do at their word. It's sort of like a catch 22. I think one of the reasons there hasn't been is that people understand the real consequences to that.

Would you personally want to go in and have a shootout with these people?

You can't really have it both ways, calling the militiamen who own a bunch of high powered assault rifles crazy, and then expecting it to be some sort of smooth process to take their guns from the thousands of them out there. Anybody with eyes who's watched a documentary about them knows it would be a bloodbath. Advocating gun confiscation is advocating for unprecedented violence in america. Way way more then the occasional shooting.

That is just the unfortunate reality of the situation. To come to a real solution involves working with the nra, not against them. Fighting against them only increased the number of gun sales in america during obama. It's time to deal with the situation as it actually is, not how youd like to imagine it being.

I think better mental health care in America would make a bigger difference then trying to confiscate guns, which would be totally counterproductive. Like I keep pointing out, gun sales were at record highs under Obama and are low under Trump. That's the reality on the ground.

Mental health care in this country is terrible and embarrassing. I'm 100% in favor of your suggestion, everyone who buys a gun should go through a mental health screening. If people who fail are found to have guns, they should get free mental couciling in a state hospital. It would be a good start.

At what word?  How many 'gun nuts' have ever said, 'If the government tries to take away my assault rifle, I'm going to shoot up a school'?

If a Constitutional amendment was passed to ban ownership of handguns the Constitution's actual importance to the gunners would become immediately apparent.

Upstream we were promised mass carnage if the government tried to take their guns. Q.E.D.

Maybe not shoot up a school specifically. But shoot up places, yeah for sure. Besides, do you feel like they are mentally stable people with predictable behavior?

I'm sure a few of them would start shooting...but if they're going in to confiscate weapons from a militia..they'll bring tactical units.  It would be great tv for a police state.

I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Again, you will need a higher stressor to make someone kill a person , "confiscating guns" won't do the trick for most people.

It would make for a bloodbath. Considering that is what control is supposed to be preventing, I cant wrap my head around the logic of gun confiscation in the U.S. People like to think of these militias as a bunch of Billy Bob hillbillies playing pretend red dawn in the words, but watch the Vice documentary on them. Many are well trained, well armed, ptsd suffering ex marines. Swat might not be able to handle that, the national guard might not be that willing, and is that really a reasonable solution by any measure?

I was searching the Google and found a quora question with a bunch of NRA folks talking about what they would do if the government busted down their doors to take their guns, obviously it's not a pretty picture. https://www.quora.com/What-would-happen-...ll-private

People who advocate this haven't thought it through at all, especially if the goal is to prevent gun violence. You are going to trigger the craziest gun violence ever .

It doesn't have to be most people. One tenth of one percent of gun owners in the US is 30,000 people. Gun confiscation is not a viable solution and creates a problem many many times the magnitude of what you are trying to solve. Mental health care and mental health screening is the solution. It's easier, cheaper, more politically viable. You can get many gun owners on board with it. It wont cause a terrible bloodbath.
